overclocking q6600 with ep45 ds3l

hey so i ordered the artic cooling freezer 7 pro heatsink/fan and im gonna overclock my q6600 (G0) to 3.0 or 3.2ghz. i was just playing in the bios and it was easy but i havnt actually overclocked it yet. and i ahve a question. how much should i raise the cpu vcore. its on auto right now and at 1.275 volts. i heard if im only going to 3.0ghz i dont even need to change the vcore. and should i disable EIST and c1e? or leave it enabled. and right now my ram is set to 1066 (ram specs) but when i changed the FSB (havent done this yet waiting for heatsink) the memeory speed gets higher. i just made it so it was 1066 again. and i already passed memtest (7 passes) should i run memtest again? or would the stability still be there.

p.s. i havent actually overclocked it yet.

The amount of vcore you need varies from individual CPU to CPU. One approach is to start at a conservative OC (like 3GHz) and increase the clock by fairly small intervals, until it becomes unstable, then nudge the vcore up a notch. Repeat this process until you reach the speed you want or until the vcore or temps are as high as you want to go. You'll probably need to tweak other settings along the way.

I believe those coolers are excellent for the price, but not the greatest overall, so watch your temps.

Yes, please do set your own voltages, especially Termination and PLL becuase if you leave those in Auto it will get way more then it needs

For 3.2 on a Q6600 a good start would maybe be 1.35-1.4 Actual with Vtt(Termination)at 1.25-1.35 and PLL 1.3-1.55

ok so i overclocked it to 3.0ghz(333x9) and left the vcore on auto, pll to 1.55(the lowest one) and termination to 1.2

the idles temps seem sorta high (43,43,38,38)
load temps with prime 95(small ftt test or whatever its called) highest core was 59C-61C

temperatures are high i guess but the load temp is a little bit lower than stock intel heatsink at 2.4ghz

maybe the temps will get a little bit lower once the thermal paste sets it. i guess this is what i get for a 20 dollar heatsink and fan lol

You should find and set your own Vcore, Auto will be far more then what is needed likely and that may be why your idle temps are higher then expected. Termination you may need 1.2-1.4 for 3Ghz

Bigger heatsink would for sure help with a quad. I also do suggest TX-2 or MX-2 over AS5 anyday

yea the heatsink i got already has mx-2 thermal paste on it. and should i try 1.275 for the cpu vcore? and i enabled c1e and eist in the bios and doesnt seem to effect the overclock. just clocks down at idle and goes to 3.0ghz when i load the cpu. in the everest cpuid the vcore says i.328 is that to high for a 3.0ghz overclock? at when the cpu is at load is that why the cpu core temps are so high?

actually i think im gonna diasble the c1e and eist keeps making the cpu vid change.

update: so i changed the vcore to 1.275 in the bios and in cpuid it says 1.20 which one is correct? and im running prime 95 (smal ftt test) and the temps are already 5 C cooler than before.

and if pass prime 95 for lets say like 3 hours. could i lower the voltage even further and try to pass prime 95?

I think a lot of people are happy to run 1.328v vcore if necessary to acheive their OC, but they are probably OCing more than from 266->333 FSB. The idea is to get the vcore as low as possible and still maintain the OC and stability. So you might get to your desired OC level at quite a high vcore, and then find you can drop it down a bit and still be stable.

The difference between vcore set in the BIOS and what is reported in CPUID type utiles is called vdrop, I think. Apparently, when talking about voltages it's the one reported in Windows by tools like CPUID that people are refering to. See here: http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/ga-p...tml#post272028

More vcore will result in higher CPU temps for the same load, which is why people try to minimise vcore.

Yes, check stability with Prime95 or something; if OK then try lower vcore, test again, and so on. A lot of people use Prime95 to stress test, but I've been reading recently that the Intel Burn-in Test or OCCT stress the CPU harder and will find instabilities much sooner.

I think people usually disable C1E and EIST whilst they test and refine their OC settings, and then see if they can enable them after they've got their OC settings right. They are nice features to have working.

ok so i overclocked to 3.2(400x8) i wanted 356x9 but the closest memory i could get to 1066 was 1068. is that essentially the same thing? cause i know 400 will run hotter than 356

and which one shouldi use

Ya 1068 is fine as is a little more even.

Fastest FSB you use will be the Fastest settings
