View Full Version : Anyone play Fallout 3?

I didn't play Oblivion much, but for some reason I've been putting off studying for finals to play Fallout 3 on PC. The world is just so immersive with miles and miles of gorgeous (albeit destroyed) terrain to explore with random towns and locations filled with NPCs that move about and each have their own fictional lives and stories to tell. The main story and quests, which take place 200 years after a nuclear war, all add to the atmosphere, making you (or at least me) feel like you're really part of the game's living, dying, radioactive, world.

I love that the game can be played in a first person view or zoomed out to a third person view. For the few other RPGs I've played, the fighting/grinding can always become tedious and boring. Fallout 3 keeps things fresh since it lets you approach the action as in a regular fps game or pause it in the middle of a firefight with the VATs system to allocate action points (sort of like a turn-based game) to attack body parts with percentage-to-hit values. I love firing all my points into a supermutant's arm, watching the pained expression on his face as his weapon flies out of his hand, and then rushing in for the kill with a slow-mo powerfist punch to the face... immensely satisfying to say the least.

If there's one drawback to the gameplay, I would say that it is missing some in-game (drivable) vehicles. Initially, the only way to get quests done and to get anywhere on the map is by foot. Once you've explored those locations on the map, you can quick-travel between them, but in my opinion a car, a motorcycle, ATV, epic mount or other means of transportation would just add more to the experience later on in the game.

My last gripe isn't about the gameplay, but more about the crashes I've been getting - I have a decent gaming PC and it runs the game beautifully on high settings and decent resolution (~1400x900 I think), but for some reason once in a while it will crash for no apparent reason. I am running the game under Vista Ultimate 32bit, and haven't had any huge problems with VATS like other vista users have reported, but the game will still crash occassionally when I load into a new area. It wasn't a huge problem though, as I could play for a couple hours without interruption, but still annoying.

Anyways, if you're into RPGs or fallout or just want to see what a post-apocalyptic Washington might feel like, Fallout 3 might just be the game world you want to get lost in.

I have a Xonar too and there are a couple of things to look for. Make sure that DX3D GX is disabled. The game does not like the EAX emulation. Also make sure you dont have any FRAPS program running in the game. It does not like FPS displays.

So..... I finished the main quest and ive been everywhere in the game. I have about 9-10K caps and the alien blaster<---thats cool. I would like to start the next expantion pack but i'm really not into downloading it from microsoft live, i like having the disk. From what i hear the disk will be for sale later this month:thumbsup:

I have some time off for the next two weeks,im have knee sergary so..... i guess i play it over again.

Yeah I finished the main quest ages ago, but I loaded up an earlier save so I could finish exploring the rest of the map. Yeah the Alien Blaster is cool. There's lots of ash piles around the place now. Im currently playing Operation Anchorage and its ok, Kinda a little detached from the main game but yeah I guess its pretty cool as it new content. I really love the Gauss Gun thing, except it obscures your view a little in First Person. Still Fallout 3 is a fully sick game. I just wish the main quest was a hell of a lot longer.

I had played Oblivion before I started up Fallout 3. I didn't know Fallout 3 was also made by Bethesda but throughout Fallout 3 I kept thinking that this game had a similar engine feel to Oblivion.

I liked the story and progression... didn't like the way it ran(or lack thereof) on my system.

Yeah the beginning was a little slow but once you get to Megaton Things start to pick up. I just love wandering the wastelands. I wish the main game could have been bigger.

Speaking of Megaton...

After rumor of a heretic cult in Megaton worshiping a nuclear weapon, the Dark Angels move out from their positions in the city under Inquisitional authority to supress the warp tainted scum before they spread to other areas...

Deploying out of their positions in the ruins of the city, the Dark Angels move out to capture Megaton.

Dark Angels moving towards Megatown across wasteland.

A suspiciously bomb shaped device alerts the marines to the fact that something MAY be amiss in this village.

These two look suspicious, hold them for questioning!

You are being held on suspicion of heresy. Abandon all hope.

Trooper! Bring the Sheriff over here, I have words for him...

Now, Sheriff, you will explain to me why there is a large fission device in the middle of your village and why your citizens are worshipping it. Such heresy can not be permitted, in the Emperor's name!

THIS is how to play Fallout 3. With Space Marines backing you up :p

hahahaha Nce story you have Painted there. Did you execute anyone?

08-03-2009, 03:10 PM
Only 3 heretics... And 1 Sheriff.

The Inquisition was so pleased with the squashing of the nuke bomb cult, my character was promoted to Sergeant:

Nice. You must be playing the DLC? Brotherhood of Steel or something. When I went through Fallout 3 I disarmed the Nuke in Megaton. Ive been meaning to play again and blow the town up, just to see what happens. I think Ten Penny Would like that, But I killed him to. And stole his Pimp Suit

Here is my quick youtube vid. Its cool. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23QXlczRXok
