Canon huh...how about epson...every hear anything about them?

Even though these maybe a little much for you just read this as the quality stays pretty constant over these products' ranges.

Check out the Canon N1240U (LED) or D1250U2 (mirror). Either are quite good, do 2400x1200dpi, USB interface and should be in your price range (rough guestimate, I'm unsure of the exact costs in the US)
