Wiggo
07-21-2002, 01:32 AM
There's always some excuse at this time of year for price rises but they rarely if ever hold water and why is it always at this time of year? For the last 5 years that I know of we have always gone thru this at this same time of year. :(

Why are my scores so low? My processor should be up to speed. Why is my hard drive so slow compare to others that use this program? Why is my 3dmark score so low compared to others? Is this normal or am I just having problems.

ReSpAwN DeMoN
07-24-2002, 12:54 PM
Well I'm sure I have DMA turned on but when you say enable DMA do you mean something in the bios or is this in the device manager or something in the registry.

FLaCo
07-24-2002, 01:04 PM
My score prolly is a bit higher (HDD score) because of the RAID_0 setup...that what i am thinking...any one disagree?: peace2:

ReSpAwN DeMoN
07-24-2002, 01:15 PM
I agree with you......but what explains people scoring 800 or higher? Or people that score in the thousands that still are running IDE?

Wiggo
07-24-2002, 01:31 PM
Just check the properties of the drive in Windows and see if DMA is enabled, also what 4in1 drivers are you using? :?:

hmmm i'm guessing ur t-bird is scoring quite low compared to other systems bcos maybe pcmark2002 supports SSE....which the the t-bird doesn;t have...so it's at quite a disadvantage...and as for ur HD....hmmm u are scoring a bit low, but not low enuf to worri about...i have a 40GB barracuda 4 and i scored about 800..
is the deathstar....errr i mean deskstar supposed to have good performance?

hope that makes things a bit clearer:)

ReSpAwN DeMoN
07-24-2002, 03:19 PM
Deathstar jeezes........everyone seems to hate this drive..... lol no but seriously I don't seem to have any problems with it. The only reason why I bought it in the first place was because I read reviews that it performs overall faster.......then after I had it for a few months I heard different stories that the fast speeds comes with a price and that price is the problems that the drives have.

chisholm
07-24-2002, 03:24 PM
lol all i knew about the deathstar was that some were failing after a few months...i think apparently as long as u don;t use it for more than about 12hrs a day it won;t have any problems...

I was originally looking at getting an IBM GXP drive, but reading about all the problems that people were having I was scared away

Instead I got a WD 80GB ATA100 Special Edition and ran PCMark2002 and the HD score was 1400!! I'm pleased with that since that's close to what some people have gotten with RAID and I'm not using RAID. My CPU scored a little over 5000 and my mem scored a little under 3900, I forget the exact numbers.

FLaCo
07-25-2002, 08:56 AM
Again,lol..great numbers man...for your sysytem and yea that HDD score rocks...i love those 8mb drives...anywho..take care and can't wait to your rig o/ced...

zeradul
07-25-2002, 10:52 AM
So a WD 80GB ATA100 gets a score of 1400, and what does your raid setup get Flaco?

FLaCo
07-25-2002, 12:08 PM
Its in the beginning of the thread i believe it was a 1377...that goes to show raid is not all that anymore...especially after these beautiful WD 8mb drives came out. I was prolly better off with that drive alone than the RAID_0 setup..not just for the bit of performance but mainly for safety one drive gives next to a Raid array (with the ability to give raid performance of course).: peace2: i dunno pcmkr made the choice of that drive for that purpose but it was a wise one.

zeradul
07-25-2002, 12:50 PM
Well, then the Benchmark, clearly still has some flaws.... Maybe the 8 MB buffer throws off the score...

These benchmarks that make up their own composite scores are silly- I mean, what does 1400 mean?. If you truely want to compare things like hard drives, then it should be simple as a program that accuratly tests and presents you with Average Read Speed, Average Write Speed, and Average Seek Time. I don't think anyone here would believe any single 7200 rpm drive can out-perform a 7200rpm pair in RAID 0.

pcmkr
07-25-2002, 12:58 PM
Doesn't make sense to me either as the why it beat the raid score, but that 8MB buffer prolly is the reason.

I mainly chose that drive because I knew it would be fast, but also reliable. I didn't hear any problems with this drive unlike the IBMs were having and problems with a HD was the last thing I was looking for.

I agree with you zeradul that they should make the program so it shows all the read, write, and access speeds as well.

Wiggo
07-25-2002, 01:37 PM
That 8MB cache's burst rate would certainly put it clearly in front of other drives 2MB ones as even in a RAID 0 it still has double the amount but I hear that the 8MB in RAID 0 are blisterin'. ;)

pcmkr
07-25-2002, 01:56 PM

Not that I want to interrupt this interesting discussion,:p just wanted your input on this.
I decided to run PCMark2002 on my system after installing all the software that I wanted on it. The memory and the CPU scored about the same, but the HD score went way down. Now its around 950, compared to 1400 when I ran it after fresh windows install and minimal software installation.
Think the score went down because of all the stuff I installed? I unchecked everything in startup in msconfig and nothing loads at startup except necessary stuff. I bet if I wiped the drive and reinstalled windows I'd get the score back up around 1400.

FLaCo
07-31-2002, 06:14 AM
I just ran another PCMark for you ...and i've got the same score...1364 more or less of the previous one. I have alot if stuff installed from Office Xp to MAYA and other 3d cad type programs plus games and internet documents, music, mpegs etc.. all loads of stuff. So i dunno if has to do with the raid..but it prolly does.

pcmkr
07-31-2002, 06:18 AM
Yep, most likely the RAID is helping you out there. I'm not complaining though, my system still runs just as fast as day one, just the score that dropped. It's kinda strange.

FLaCo
07-31-2002, 06:26 AM
Yea dude that is just a score...nothing to worry about at all...your computer is screamin fast and as long as you are happy with ...IT ROCKS!...plus who knows...when or if you decide to add another Special Edition WD drive into the picture with a RAID_0 setup...your baby will really move.

Take Care there Buddy: peace2:

pcmkr
07-31-2002, 06:34 AM
BTW what RAID controller are you using? Highpoint...Promise? My mobo has Highpoint built in. How's the setting up go for RAID?

FLaCo
07-31-2002, 06:45 AM
I have a Highpoint which is considered by many the best. Setup for a RAID is not hard at all. There should be a command CTRL+H right after the BIOS "Press DEL for setup" prompt. That takes you to a HIGHPOINT Bios type screen...its pretty much self-explanatory from there. You choose the type of raid setup from 0,1 and 0+1. For perfromance its a RAID_0. Then choose a boot disk out of the two HDD you have. Thats about it. After that you will have 160 GB of Space...lol..thats freaking alot...i get lost with 80!...lol:laugh:

pcmkr
07-31-2002, 06:50 AM
Yeah, I have the ctrl+h prompt come up when the controller is detecting HDD at boot. I was wondering, should I put the 2nd HDD on a seperate cable plugging into the 2nd connector on the mobo or would it work ok to put the HDD on the same cable as the first drive?

FLaCo
07-31-2002, 06:58 AM
I think it will work but it will lack in its intended performance. One HDD on each IDE channel is best. :thumb:

pcmkr

pcmkr
07-31-2002, 07:17 AM
Flaco, what kind of voltages are you running when overclocking. Just want to get an idea of what to expect when I go for it.:shoot:

FLaCo
07-31-2002, 07:29 AM
Up to 148 i was running default voltages than when i bumped it up to 150 i went to 1.775 but it was a bit unstable when running a 3dmark so i had to bump it to 1.80 just to get that thing to run. I still get lock ups on PCMark tho when i'm on 150 FSB...it never fails it always happens at the "audio conversion" part of the benchmark. But you prolly don't need to increase or maybe you do...it all depends on the actual proc.

pcmkr
07-31-2002, 07:46 AM
Yeah, mine I left at default multiplier and I cranked the FSB to 138 and 3DMark crashed back to desktop. So I know it's asking for more power. You running default multiplier, or did you unlock your proc? Any voltage changes to the RAM?

FLaCo
07-31-2002, 09:31 AM
No voltage changes at all...i never unlocked the multipliers..just increased my FSB and that was it. Look at your temps before you run 3D mark what are they?

nd4spd
07-31-2002, 09:41 AM
Here's mine for the heck of it...

PCMark2002

CPU - 5218
Memory - 3591
HDD - 1084

http://service.madonion.com/compare?pcm=532111

pcmkr
07-31-2002, 09:46 AM
Well, the temps are always different depending on how hot my room is. I'll watch the temps though. Since it is cooler tonight I'm thinking the normal CPU idle temps will be around 105-110. Full load it gets to around 120. As long as it doesn't go too high I'll be alright. I'm still stuck at work ATM, but when I get home I'm gonna start playing around with it.:hammer:

BTW good scores nd4spd:thumb:

FLaCo
07-31-2002, 10:10 AM
Well...keep on eye on them because that was the reason i couldn't get ahead before i installed my side panel fans. Before the fans i could only go as high as 138 or maybe 140 i don't really remember but i know it wasn't all that high. Now its 150 but to keep it safe i leave it at 148 FSb...which reminds me i have to change my sig. 150 is somewhat unstable for me..somewhat meaning at times its real smooth and others blue screen attack. Its not for WiGGO though which he has constantly running at 150. Though i might just go back to 133 i mean i have no need for...my system runs sweet in stock form...i suppose your does too. So if you want o/c but just to see what you can get out of it for fun...otherwise with your heat keep it cool at 133..thats my two and half cents. : peace2:

pcmkr
07-31-2002, 10:17 AM
Yeah, I think that's my plan. Just to see how far I can take it and see what it's capable of, but then turn it back down when I'm done. It's plenty fast at stock speeds. I'm just curious like any normal person:p Umm, well I wouldn't say I'm normal, but who wants to be normal these days. That's just plain boring:sleepy:

See, my point about useless numbers is proven again. Sure all the P4's with Rambus are going to have great ram #'s, but what do those numbers mean??? NOTHING! As long as there is no performance benefit (1% to 3% doesn't count) then all the Big numbers in the world aren't gonna help you to do anything, cept spend your money.

3D mark is a pretty good scale, however, and I say 'pretty good' because nothing tests your computer like what it is actually used for. Thats the only number that matters. So if you play alot of Doom3, its how many FPS you get in whatever res, throughout whatever benchmark demo. If you browse the web alot, then what matters is how fast you connect, and how efficient the user is. Etc.

chisholm
08-09-2002, 08:14 PM
exactly..even though the ridicoulasly high memory bandwidth of p4's often give very benchmark scores....it seems in real life situations the p4 doesn;t need or can;t utilize all that extra bandwidth:cheers:

drpeterbright
08-09-2002, 09:51 PM
:drunk: Except for some statistical programs for data analysis that I run, the P4/Rambus combo is overkill for most of what I do. In those applications, the memory bandwidth is useful to me. You're right, go with what you do not an artificial benchmark. We're all addicted to numbers and that's a good thing.

Intake - 80mm x 80 mm 50 + cfm bottom side of case

Card fan - 42 + cfm directly under video card

Bay fan - 42 + cfm under hd

Exhaust - 60mm x 60 mm 22 + cfm on top

Ducted 80mm x 80mm cpu fan exhausts out back

Single 80mm x 80 mm psu fan exhausts out back

I also like Tremors. Kevin Bacon & Reba in the same flick!

the first one is for my AMD (@1.65GHz) - the second is for my P4 (@ 2.7GHz)

it depends on your harddrive. What kind do you have. is it 7200 rpms or 5400 rpms. What is the cache size on the drive. Are you in a raid situation? All of these factors can help to incease or decreas your harddrive scroes. For me, I got a high drive score b/c I am using 7200 rpm drives with 8mb cache and raiding the drives for speed.

I really don't think thats a crap score...you don't have Raid you don't have 8mb of cache...so that score seems very reasonable.

pga1234
10-22-2002, 09:55 AM
Well if you dont have a 8mb cache and it isnt setup in a RAID array you arent going to get much higher. But that score is around the highest I have seen for such a setup.

thomson1968
10-22-2002, 10:57 AM

Wiggo
10-22-2002, 11:33 AM
The cache is built into the hard drive but you can't change it. The JB series of Western Digital hard drives have an 8MB cache, just about everthing else has 2MB (or smaller depending on the age).

RAID is combining 2 hardrives on a special controller and stripping data across both making the 2 really 1 larger hard drive and combining both caches leads to a faster data transfer again. :smokin:

flaco, I do not know why scores are lower than yours...it seems odd. But I have read either in this forum or in others that the harddrive test in 3dmark is less than acurate at time. So....who knows! :thumb:

I got about the same score with my AMD system as the first scores for the CPU and memory, but my HD got a bit higher...what kind of HD do you have?

I have a maxtor in my AMD box & a Quantum in my P4 box - I didn't expect either to score very high - but 475? that sucks.

Maybe it's time to pick up a WD w/the 8mb cache.....or go SCSI :D

I used to be a hardcore SCSI user. I though I would never use IDE….well, now I do not see the point of SCSI. You spend more $ for less space, and the drives are not that much faster. You can get an 80 gig 8mb WD drive for $110…..so nice!! Oh so nice!

I know its not in a form of measurement (i.e. mb/s, etc) but it should be useful for comparison...even though its not in mathmatical units. For example if pga get 1100 on his and i get 1300 on mine your score should technically be higher.

Just remember guys that the PCI bus has to be negotiated with all the rest of the traffic on it and usable bandwidth will be getting close to the limit so after a certain point there can't be anymore increase at all. ;)

of course there's no practical reason for me to have a SCSI hard drive...but I really don't have any practical reason to have the system's I already have. Other than the occasional gaming session....one box with a PIII would probably serve me just fine, but where's the fun in that?

Why get a SCSI drive?.... because I don't have one & it would be fun to play with for a while.

It's kind of like - why get another $75 cpu cooler....well maybe I'll be able to OC by another 10MHz & score an extra 50pts. in my favourite benchmark - I try not to get sucked into that too much, but sometimes.........

hmm i do not think droping an extra 150-200 dollars is fun. I garuntee you it plugs in the same, fdisks the same, formats the same as an ide drive. You would be better of spend the extra money on something else if you are looking for something to do!!!! Like a playstation or a something that will give you more source of entertainment....the hard will be like: oh I plugged it in, ohh I formated it, oh I installed the os, oh my score is incrimentally better. and that will be it. hehe.

Upgrading is always fun :thumb:. Expensive but fun. I mean if I had all the money in the world I would upgrade every month, but I don't.

I have the good fortune of not having to pay for the vast majority of my hardware upgrades....so I probably derive a little more pleasure out of it than most......& I won't be buying a playstation anytime soon - unless they come up with one you can run CAD/CAM on.

most of my hardware has been paid for by my employer - however, I recently received a promotion & won't be called upon to do CAD/CAM work at home anymore...so the gravy trail is probably just about at an end.

Just wondering...what resolution are all of you running PCMARK 2002 at? And do you have it on 32-bit or 16-bit graphics...not to mention FSAA on/off, etc. etc. Some of you may have lower scores if you run it at a higher resolution. I think everyone really games at 1024x768 or higher so that should be the set mark. Anyhow let everyone know what your testing at so that we all know how the systems stack up at the same settings.

Cool, I'll have to try it again at the res. I'm running dual monitors @ 1600x1200 on both. The second monitor just kinda flickered while it ran, gonna try it with it disabled. I'll have to check on the AA, etc.
