View Full Version : Distributed Computing Program - WE NEED A NEW ONE!

Mr.Tweak
07-03-2002, 11:00 PM
Since UD has seemed to bite the dust, we need something new to unite the TweakTown community. What distributed computing program would everyone like to start participating in?

I'm fairly certain we can get quite high up into the ranks of any program on the Internet if everyone in the forums dedicates their computing power to whatever program is choosen.

Let me know what you all think!

Wiggo

Well the TT Seti Team (http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/stats/team/team_101812.html) is still goin'. ;)

Maybe we should push SETI then? User opinion need, come on people! :)

Mr. C
07-04-2002, 10:42 AM
I think SETI is cool, but deep down I think when our extra-terrestrial neighbors want to be found they will probably just knock on the door.

At least that project doesn't appear to be run by politicly driven jerks like UD.

I'd really like to get in touch with the intergalactic zoning commission. This planet is broken, what with this tilting its axis thing, you freeze for a few months then you sweat your arse off for a few months:confused: Somebody really needs to fix that, it's starting to became a real annoyance.

Either Folding or Genome

SETI has no real point that will benefit the human race...

Folding At Home (http://www.overclockers.com.au/folding/aboutfah.htm)

But UD seem to be getting better...I connect nearly everytime now...

I say stick to UD :)

Because TT has NO chance against OCAU and the [H]orde with any other DD program :p

Vindaloo
07-04-2002, 06:37 PM
Yeah, the folders over at OCAU are pretty passionate about being #1. I haven't spent time at [H] but I'm guessing that they are the same. Personally I fold for OCAU... *ducks*

Mr.Tweak

How do you think all the computers at Kheldar's work would feel running UD all the time without any choice?

OK Moose tells me UD is back working again - If we choose to stay with UD let's push it go further up in the ranks!

I don't know why.........

I have been able to connect everytime for the last 3 days :)

Wiggo
07-05-2002, 07:55 AM
But how long before that couldn't ya?
Heard quite a few ppl have gone up to weeks at a time before getting a connection and this has been goin' on for months now.

Check out the UD Forums (http://forum.ud.com/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum;f=1)..

They know they have a prob and are working on it, they say they have corrected it...I think that it is getting a lot better...about 1 week ago it took about 12hours before it would get a connection...but now it is nearly everytime

Mr. C

This isn't your typical distributed computing program. And I see no mention of teams, but it does have potential to help mankind. The portion of mankind with email accounts at least.

When they get the Outlook Express version up and running I think I'll give this one a whirl.

OK, It's not like curing AIDS or anything, but it would be cool if we could slam spam to the mat and make it cry "Uncle". :thumb:

I'll drink to that. I had to limit my daughter's Hotmail account to receive emails ONLY from those in her address book. It grates my nerves to have to go through and dump the porn stuff so that my eight year old can read her emails. :shoot:

Mr. C
07-07-2002, 09:59 AM
Yeah, this whole spam thing is way out of hand. I'm still puzzling out how the "septic tank" ones get past my filters????

This has got to be the scourge of the internet -- well, pedophiles and spam, pedophiles being much worse of course.

Hope you are managing to keep dry Darthtanion:?: referring to the weather, not the "I'll drink to that".

Wiggo

Yeah both girls have had their's set at address book only for a while now but how a lot of these have bogus addies is beyond me. :angryfire

There are some real brains behind all this garbage mailing.
Rarely does any of it originate from a valid email address. Not a great deal of it ever is addressed to me, yet I recieve it anyway.

I used to bounce a lot of it using the Kmail in Linux, but then I just ended up with an inbox full of messages from daemon "Address contains permanent fatal errors" :shoot2:

I wish I understood it all, as that would surely help me to make better filters:?:

Hi guys,

As team captain for UD, I received a response from UD saying to please be patient while they are incorporating the second phase of the "molecule molestation". The server may not work first go, but leave UD sitting in your system tray and more than likely it will start sending within 10 minutes. The results are a fair bit larger than before (about 500KB), so those who are with an ISP that measures uploads and has their system running 24/7 should carefully monitor their usage.

Apparantly the UD server is restricted to 600 concurrent connections at the moment, but that will be fixed when the Ligandfit project gathers steam. So for those running UD, stick with it - things are on the way up!!! :thumb:

I don't like the New UD client, its not as stable on Win9X boxes as the old one. I'm still running it though.. and since early last week I haven't had any connection problems with their servers.

Yeah the new Leginfit project is alot bigger than the old "think" project, think used to send and recieve around 10 - 25kb per molicule.. unless there was a update then it was about 700kb.. now this new leginfit project is sending aroudn 300 - 500k and recieving 100 - 300k.. now this is putting alot of strain on the server.. from what i have heard they are getting more bandwidth.. or somethinng like that...
as someone mentioned there is a 600 user limit so that is really not that much especially when it woudl take about 6 -10 mins for a dial up user to send there data to the server and another 1 - 5 mins to download the new data for the molicules.. i have no idea why the new leginfit molicules are so large guess it has somethign to do with it complexicty (no idea how to spell that work lol)

i am sticking with UD, i have not had it runinng for about a week now.. lags my net too much so when i get ADSL later this week then i will start it running again

i got around 250,000 points atm.. and hope that i can get more :) hehe

hope u peoples can join us in the fight for cancer

And I love the new ligandfit module - looks much more involved.

I'm also 69th in all time CPU untilisation

Albinus - where's TT in the teams list - I'd look it up myself but my crappy internet now really sux!!!!

TPG finally worked out that we had an unlimitted connection to the internet - it only took them three years

I used to understand it all. I got to a point where I had it down to a fine art.

It is possible to trace where the original e-mail came from, the problem being that it takes days to track it through all the nodes that they've bounced it off and all for what? So that you can send an e-mail to [email protected] and tell them what this account is up to?

Given the vast amount of dickheads out there and the fact that it took me a whole week to shut 2 single spammers down. It wasn't worth it. So I went back to the pub.

HI all, I'm new to your board ( <---- first post  )

I've been doing DC for a few years - Seti, Folding, Genome, RC5, UD Think, D2OL, MoneyBee (sucks), EON, ECCp-109 and some others. I started a team and a site last November - ExtremeDC. Currently we are 6th overall in the world in ECCP and slowly gaining on the #5 team. This project is more then halfway complete, estimates are between 3-6 months (could be sooner, maybe longer), it depends when the two winning Distingusted Points are found! The project involves testing encryption methods along an elliptic curve. The client is small, does not require an Internet connection except for sending points (and this can be done on any computer), it does not download any work units, it creates a starting point on your computer from your system information! One thing about this project is there are two $1000 US prizes to be awarded to the two people that find the winning points! The project is sponsored by Certicom (http://www.certicom.com) and run by Notre Dame University in Indiana, USA Project Link (http://www.nd.edu/~cmonico/eccp109/)

From looking at your stats and support for DC here at Tweaktown, I see you've got some serious DC'ers here

I'd like to make an offer if I may that would benefit both Tweaktown and ExtremeDC. We would like to finish this project in the top 5 (#1 would be great!). Tweaktown is considering a new project to start! The top 3 teams would be hard to beat - Dutch Power Cows, Arstechnica, TechIMO, 4 and 5 we can take given enough time!
Top 100 Team Stats (http://www.nd.edu/~cmonico/eccp109/teamsall.html)

What I would propose is that Tweaktown form a "mini-team" under ExtremeDC. All the members would use the same "username" to submit their individual points, but use their own email address and name so that if they find the winning two points, they would receive credit for the find and also receive the money!

I would recommend a "mini-team" name of tweaktown.com so that your site would receive recognition at being a major threat in Distributed Computing. You would be near the top of the stats from the beginning of your start (if you decide to), we (ExtremeDC) will provide all the help and answers that you may have, we will make a lot of noise and promote Tweaktown as being a new member of our team and I can guarantee an increase in international site traffic to Tweaktown because of this!

Their are clients available for Windows, Linux, BEOS, and Solaris (the SPARC client needs to be compiled, I have the only known Solaris8 X86 client if needed!).

Think about and discuss this offer before making a decission. It would be a great partnership and benefit both you and I to acheive our goals! Visit the main project page, view the stats, visit our site ExtremeDC (http://www.extremedc.com) and if you have any questions at all, just ask. Also I have a help page on getting started Here (http://www.extremedc.com/eccp)

Thanks for taking the time to read all of this mess ;)

I'm sure this is a dead topic, but, if I deciced to leave [email protected] for some reason or wanted to split my CPU time, I'd go with Mersenne Prime (http://www.mersenne.org/prime.htm) I appeals to my enjoyment with mathematics, at least from my younger days. :geek:

i take it that the talk about the [email protected] talk is dead. it would have been just what i was loking for a site that was starting a new team that way i wouldn't have to start from the very bottom and work my way thru the people that have quit. oh well i guess i will go over to ocia if tweaktown isn't gonna have one . please respond

Glad to see you joined the ranks of the TT [email protected] Team. Happy crunching.

All newcomers are welcome and invited to add their contribution.

Also, we recommend the use of the CLI version of the client, since it is the most efficient method of processing units, your stats will climb more quickly. :thumb:
