I had a HDD in one computer and windows came up with grips of bad sectors... tried to format and reinstall and it wouldn't even install. THEN put the HDD in a different computer... works fine.

:shoot: SO! Is there any more accurate way to tell if a HDD is totally shot?

If so, how can you recover the data (or what is left) from it? :shoot2:

Is it possible that the boot sector anti-virus was enabled in the BIOS on the 1st computer and disabled on the second one? You don't mention partitioning. Could you not change partitions on the 1st machine? What file system were you using? What version of Windows? Did it work for a while on the 1st box, or was it flaky from go? Drive diagnostic tools are often available at the drive manufactureer's site for free download. There are pro utilities too, but they are often quite expensive. Consumer level tools such as Spinrite range between $50-100us.
