  • Upgrade from XFX GTS 250 to MSI GTX 560

It looks like the MSI GTX 560 uses a different NVIDIA driver file that the old XFX GTS 250. I have several computers with old and older XFX/NVIDIA cards and have always used the latest NVIDIA driver download from XFX to update all the drivers. Has anyone been down this path - will I be able to install the "New" MSI/NVIDA drivers over the old XFX/NVIDA stuff or do I need to do the uninstall and cleanup routine?

Can't say for sure, but to avoid future problems would un install old drivers, you can do it in safe mode with driver sweeper, then install the msi drivers, that way you know if any problems POP up its not down to corrupted drivers

Re: Upgrade from XFX GTS 250 to MSI GTX 560

      My personal preference is to:
      1. uninstall the existing drivers
      2. boot into safe mode
      3. run Driver Sweeper to ensure that any Nvidia "residue" is removed
      4. reboot into windows and install the newer drivers
Some prefer to skip the Driver Sweeper cleaning unless they encounter some unexpected problems with the new install.

Right now the MSI site offers the 266.44 drivers for the 560Ti cards.
Nvidia might offer newer WHQL and/or beta drives for your card from GeForce.com - Get the Most Out of Your GPU.
Make sure that you download the correct version for your O/S version.

        Prof Jim,
Went to the NVIDIA site and downloaded the latest driver file (version 270.61) and it includes the driver for the 200 series and the 500 series of video chips. So I was wrong or misled by the stuff on the MSI site. As you expected, the NVIDIA site had a newer release than the one on the MSI site. One driver file update still works for all the NVIDIA cards I have or will have soon! Thanks for directing me to the NVIDA site - I got spoiled by the XFX site since they seem to do a better job of keeping things up to date. But after reading all the good press ... I just had to try the MSI N560GTX TI TWIN FROZR II OC card.

Re: Upgrade from XFX GTS 250 to MSI GTX 560

          Glad to help out.
It appears that MSI doesn't update their Nvidia driver download versions.
They still offer the same 259.22 driver download for my MSI 460 Hawk that came with the Hawk's cdrom disk. I'm very impressed with the MSI build quality and their tech support. I emailed them a question and received their reply several hours later. I had issues with the 263.09 drivers, but the 266.58 drivers seem to be okay. My benchmarks with the 266.58 drivers are slightly worse compared with the 259.22 drivers.

Your 560Ti is very similar to my 460, and it looks like the 560Ti offers about 25% higher performance with a 25% higher price. I've read several reviews where stock 560Ti cards can be overclocked to 975MHz using stock voltage settings. It looks like the 560Ti gpu can run at over 1000MHz with modest voltage tweaks.

http://forums.tweaktown.com/video-ca...g-results.html has my overclocking results. Feel free to post your benchmark results in the thread. It would be interesting to see how much higher your results are compared to the MSI 460 Hawk.

Re: Upgrade from XFX GTS 250 to MSI GTX 560

            ProfJim,
Maybe a little off the subject but - After installing the MSI GTX 560 Video Card the wattage usage @ idle as reported by the APC XS 1500 UPS dropped about 40 watts and after swapping out the Corsair 620 HX P/S for the SeaSonic X650 P/S the wattage usage @ idle dropped another 40 watts! So I now have an overclocked
Q9550 system that uses 105 watts @ idle. Sound reasonable? After getting my electric bill with a note on it saying I use more electricity that my neighbors I got on the efficiency kick!

I'll wait a few days before I try OC'ing the Video Card but right now I am impressed with what I got at stock speeds. The overall 3DMark score for the Q9550 system @ 3.6 GHz was P22722 versus the P11772 for the 4.0 GHz E8500 system. The GPU scores were 18984 and 13727 respectively.

Re: Upgrade from XFX GTS 250 to MSI GTX 560

The newer AMD and Nvidia video cards are very energy efficient with low video demands. Check out the attached screenshot that shows my MSI N460GTX Hawk automatically underclocked to 51MHz gpu core frequency and 135MHz gpu memory frequency at the windows desktop. Your new 560Ti card should be significantly more energy efficient compared with your older GTS 250 with low video demands. My older 7600GT "super wimp" idled at 40 degrees (C) compared to the Hawk's 25 - 27 degree idle temperatures.

Your 80+ gold rated Seasonic X650 power supply is at least 5 - 8% more efficient than an 80+ bronze rated psu, and will be 7 - 10% more efficient than power supplies that only meet the minimum 80+ standard. The original (Seasonic made) 2006 Corsair 620HX power supplies easily reached 80% efficiency and the newer 620HX models were about 85% efficient. In the u.p.s. thread, I recently tested my APC Back-UPS ES 750 uninterruptible power supply with a simulated power failure. I installed the APC PowerChute software before the test, even though I've been using my UPS for several years. The displayed 99 watt "power supplied" is a bit confusing. The Zalman ZM-MFC2 fan controller's watt meter shows that my system uses about 105 watts at idle. My UPS is currently powering my system and my 24" LCD monitor. The watt meter readings seem to be accurate, as my Hawk video benchmark tests show that the system power draw is similar to power loads in many video card benchmark reviews.

I will retest my wattage readings with my 7600GT the next time I remove the Hawk card to install several more VRM heatsinks.
My new Seasonic X650 psu arrived today and it will be installed later this week when it replaces my bronze rated, Seasonic made Antec TP-750 TruePower New psu. The Antec psu will go into my backup system, replacing my aging but still functional Antec EA-500 watt psu, which is also made by Seasonic. I expect that the new X650 psu will show that system watts has dropped by about 5%.

In the jonnyGuru X650 review, the X650 remained in "fanless" mode with up to 300 watt loads in the cold test, and fanless up to 135 watts in their hot test. With the psu fan in fanless mode, this means that there is about a 5 - 8 watt savings when the fan is not spinning or it is in low rpm mode. At full psu fan speeds, the psu fan draws a maximum of 15 watts.

I have a digital multi-meter (DMM) that can measure A.C. amperage loads. I will test with this clamp meter after I've made a special extension cord that is needed so that I can clamp around only one of the wires to get A.C. amperage readings.

You will probably find that your 560Ti with stock settings is able to play most demanding video games with high to very high game settings. The only reason you might want to overclock your card is if you need higher performance to game with maximum quality game settings and still maintain acceptable frame rates.

Re: Upgrade from XFX GTS 250 to MSI GTX 560

                ProfJim,
Now you got me going again. Looks like I'll have to reinstall the Corsair 620 HX that I took out of the Q9550 system in one of my other systems and see if I was wrong when I said the wattage usage @ idle dropped ~40 watts when I installed the SeaSonic P/S. I have a second Corsair 620 HX powering an in-house server with an NVIDIA 9600 GT video card and that machine uses ~112 watts @ idle and the E8500 system with the Corsair 850 TX and a AMD 5830 video card uses ~115 watts @ idle. I sure wish I would have bought several of the SeaSonic X650 when NewEgg had them on sale for $99.99! It is a very nice modular P/S and I wanted quiet. At a savings of ~10 watts over the Corsair 620 and 850 units I could have rationalized that they would pay for themselves in energy savings in a hundred years or so!

I was surprised that the server with the old 9600 GT video card was very efficient. The GTS 250 video card must be a real enery hog. I'll try swapping that in (and out) of the server system also. All of three systems are attached to their own APC XS 1500 UPS so at least the same vendor is reporting wattage usage.

Re: Upgrade from XFX GTS 250 to MSI GTX 560

So I've got you coming and going.
I'm not too sure how accurate the PowerChute software is when it comes to reporting the watts supplied from the UPS to your system.

Your Q9550 system only needing 105 watts at idle seems quite low. I would have guessed that it would use at least 150 watts at idle. Double check your win7 power settings. I'm using "balanced power" settings with minor changes to when the monitor turns off (45 minutes) and have my system set to never enter sleep mode. None of my highly overclocked dual core processors (E6550, E6300 (R0), and E2140) would lower the cpu clock speed at idle with win2K, even when C1E and EIST were enabled. Both of these settings are disabled with win7 x64 Home Premium.

I'm curious to see your test results with your playing musical chairs with your video cards and power supplies.

Yup, it's hard to justify the added cost of an 80+ gold rated psu when you're looking at the long term energy cost savings unless you have your system on 24/7. The closeout price for my X650 was $99.99 with free shipping. Currently Newegg has several Seasonic made 650 watt, 80+ bronze rated (82%/85%/82%) power supplies available for $60 - $80. For me it was a no-brainer to pay $100 for a top of the line, 100% modular, cool running, very quiet psu.

My only regret is that the included Seasonic case badge wasn't made of 24 carat gold.

**edit** Newegg shows that the X650 is out of stock, not discontinued.
The current price of the newer X660 is about $162 and is currently out of stock (2011-04-25).
I was very tempted to buy the X750 for $125 several months ago when Newegg had a temporary price reduction. I'm glad that I waited.

I don't know how accurate the UPS PowerChute software is either since I rarely look at it via the computer(s). The APC XS 1500 UPS has its own display that you cycle through to see all the various power stuff. Right now on the Q9550 with the monitor on and typing this response the wattage usage says 110 on the UPS. I guess I can try swapping the UPS's around too to verify that I'm getting consistant readings. First thing I tried was Enabling C1E and EIST and could not detect a change in the power consumption so I put them back to Disabled.

When the overclocked 920/4200 test completed, the Hawk video card automatically underclocked to the normal 51MHz gpu core frequency and 135MHz gpu memory settings. The system power load also returned to the normal 103 watts at idle, even with the Hawk's higher overclocked voltage settings.

Re: Upgrade from XFX GTS 250 to MSI GTX 560

I finally brought up PowerChute on the Q9550 system to compare the reported software watt usage to the watt usage shown on the UPS display. Since my last posting I removed one of the WD Black 640 GB drives so the wattage usage dropped by ~7 watts. Anyway, the software showed ~95 watts usage @ idle and the UPS hardware reported ~100 watts usage @ idle. So, a lot less scientific than your analysis but I agree the software understates the amount of power being used.

I saw where NewEgg had a special on a 6950 a few days after I bought the 560. The 6950 was $20-30 dollars cheaper as I recall. However, based on the review you pointed out and all the others I read before buying I'm happy with the card I got.

Re: Upgrade from XFX GTS 250 to MSI GTX 560

I agree, your 560 Ti is a winner.
As they said in the article, AMD has been very aggressive with price cuts, and it looks like AMD is trying to prevent a repeat of last summer when the GTX 460 cards really took hold of that segment of the market. When I buy new components, I never look back and think about what if I'd just waited a bit longer before buying. I originally wanted a 5770 card for about $120 dollars last fall, and finally rationalized that a 1GB GTX 460 would be just enough overkill to keep me happy for at least 3 - 4 years, especially since I don't do any computer gaming.

Are you sure that you have all 4 Q9550 cores enabled?
It looks like the APC PowerChute software is in the ballpark when it comes to reporting power usage.

My system has 7 case fans running at ~ 3/4 speed plus my Balder cpu fan runs at 1900 rpm, so my fans are probably using at least 20 -25 (or more) watts.

Newegg price changes can drive you crazy at times, but I like to think that I win more than I loose. Today I ordered a 2 x 2GB set of Kingston HyperX T1 1066 DDR2 memory from Newegg; with their 15% discount, free shipping and $20 mail in rebate, the final cost will be $42 for the set. We win some and we lose some.
