The new iMac unveiled.
What effect, if any do you think this will have on the designs to come for IBM compatible pc's?
I think it looks cool - but it doesn't strike me as having much potential for a power rig:D

The high-end iMac with DVD burner is pretty sweet. especially since they have that tiny little case now. And I love the swinging arm which holds the LCD, although I think a gooseneck type arm like on a reading lamp would be much cooler.:D

It will appeal to those who want the Jetsons look, but I think that any serious user will probably go with something that can be more easily upgraded in the future.

it looks like a pretty good lan machine (the LCD talking)
but besides that, it's more for looks IMO

Looks neat and compact as.....
I wouldn't have one at home, but in an office setting it would be great.

Too bad their CPU's aren't caught up in the speed wars of AMD and Intel, cause their architecture rocks.

Anybody heard the asking price for one of these? Just curious.

Actually, on second thought - this might be Apple's answer to the net appliance:eek:

How fast is the cpu of the new IMAC?

I'm not a Mac enthusiast, ( actually I've never used one - though I do have some curiosity) but as I understand it, the top one is 800mhz - the lower end model is 700mhz.

Understand though that that Motorola CPU they use is capable of some impressive MFlops - really awesome architecture as I hear it.

yeah, while the clock speeds don't compare well to the PC, they are still capable of some big things.. we've got a G4 here at work... I got no idea how to use it really, so I was just stuffing around with all the vid capturing and editing.. it's great. it processes nearly everything in real time...

so when are apple going to admit defeat to the atstronomical PC? They are fighting a losing war. :shoot:

well, not really. Multimedia enthusiasts swear by them, and i can see why....

I've read that LCD's can't cut it when it comes to gaming. Anyone know for sure. Is that the case under the monitor. My fans are bigger than that. Ed

Yes sir, just plug in the ol' keyboard and mouse, and away you go:D
Anybody know if this comes with a 2-button mouse??

Beefy

it's an Apple.. chances are it'll come with one button, but you could probably get a two button for it...

Actually, the macs are pretty cool. They are very stable and they last forever. I still have my Mac SE - all 16Mhz of it. It still runs the old games that I have. I bought it in college. I only had to shut it down about 4 times a year (spring break, x-mas break, thanksgiving break, summer break). And they didn't take up much space in my little room. :D

ok

#1. check out the internet explorer link on the bottom...microsoft...apple's enemy in the OS wars...
#2. when do you EVER see stuff for macs in stores?? (software or hardware?)
#3. LCD's suck, give me a tube anyday (albeit a Trinitron lol)
#4. apple CANNOT ever die, becuase if they did, M$ woud REALLY be a monopoly then, which is why bill gates dumped $150 mill into apple to keep them from going under. he was saving his own ass..

IE's the main browser for Apples... it's the Mac version.. nice little browser too...

You see Apple software when you go to the specialist Apple stores.. Stuff everywhere... no point putting it in normal retail outlets, cos it probably wouldn't sell...

Got a 17" Studio Display LCD screen at work.. it beats the ****e out of any 17" screen I've ever seen. It's hooked up via a DVI connection to a gf2MX, so one day when i get some time i'm gonna find some Mac ports of some decent games and see how it goes...

Looks a little fragile though and I hope the case doesn't crack up like the Cube did. :(

Actually the cubes weren't actually cracked, they just had lines in them from the injection molding process used to form the case.
Still though, for the price they charged, they could have done a better job with the case construction.
