Hi:

Recently performed major upgrades to system. Not happy with my current graphics card, EVGA GTS 450 1GB. I looked at several cards, and decided to switch to AMD and settled on Asus HD 6950 2GB.

I have an Asus P8P67 LE Rev 3.0 (http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/P8P67_LE/) MB installed in a Thermaltake V3 Black (http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/Product.aspx?S=1308&ID=1913) chassis. The 6950 card dimensions are given as 11.7" x 5". The case measures about 12.25" from the inside back to the HDD bays. Will this card fit?

Thanks,
Dave

have you measured inside with a tape measure just to makesure?from the measurements youve quoted then it should fit

Thanks. Yes, I measured with a steel ruler. I know the power connectors go on the top (side?) and not the back. I am just not sure what the 11.7" refers to. On my current card, the spec dimensions seem to refer to the PCB card itself, excluding the cooler and pin-connectors. If someone has an Asus HD 6950 2G in their PC, they might be able to give me exact outside dimensions.

11.7" will refer to the card itself, with 12.25" you should have a bit of space for the power connectors to fit,or if they fit on the top then even better,i have a 5870 card which measures 10 and a half inches and power connects at the back,it fits fine in my casecom casewith a few centimetres to spare, sorry i dont have the same card/case but i think youll be fine, maybe someone who has same card can comment further

Found evidence the 6950 will fit (lengthwise at least). Did a search on Youtube and found this Review and Benchmark video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOSeTEv76UY) where he physically measured the card. It's 11.5". Thank you for all your input. Now I just have to get up the nerve to pony up the dough.

Cheers,
Dave :wavey:

Case manufacturer says no. He said that model case (http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/Product.aspx?S=1308&ID=1913#Tab5) will accept up to a maximum 10.5" long graphics card. Oops. Now what? Can't afford too many more upgrades.

What about modifying the case to fit? It actually looks like it will fit, unless there are space requirements for heat dissipation.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Dave

What's the case looklike regarding the hdd cage? My 5870 clears the cage giving me a clear run from the back to the front of the case inside,if yours is the same it should fit, thought you said you had over 12inches spare? If so again it should fit

Thanks. I think it might work. The card encroaches slightly above bottom bay, but shouldn't touch it. I'm guessing the case manufacturer is allowing for pin connectors and cables at the back of the card. In the case of the 6950, this is not an issue.

If you do get the card, post back on how you get on,it should fit imo but if not you can modify the case fairly easy,at the most you would lose a hdd space if you hacksawed a piece out,but i dont think it would come to that

Card fit no problem. No case mod required. Thanks for the feedback. No thanks to case manufacturer tech support who said it wouldn't fit.

i was sure it would fit, cant go wrong when you measure yourself, did it clear or fall short of the hdd bay?

Thanks. I had about 3/4" clear. I can't install any drives in 2 bays, but at least it works. If I go nuts and decide to set up Crossfire with 2 cards, I'll have to get a bigger case. The second card might fit, but would be touching the PSU. :)

Just a couple of photos of card installed.

thats a huge card,my case is very similar to yours apart from my hdd's face forwards towards the side panel, having the two power connectors on the side and not the back of the card helped you alot

You're right. If pin connectors were at the back, I'd be in trouble.

Love this GPU!! Been playing Deus Ex HR at max settings with no instability. My only complaint is it heats up when I'm running 2 monitors in Extended Display mode. I guess that's to be expected. It goes from about 33C to 43C at idle.

Don't think I'll play too much with over-clocking this card, just yet, but will investigate cooling options. Fan tweaking?

Yeah its to be expected with more monitors/higher res,you can manually set a fan percentage,my 5770 is just right at 50% fan speed and silent, yet my 5870 runs cooler if I leave it on auto fan speed,so you would need to test that, one thing you can do is add a 120mm or 140mm silent fan in the top and or side panel door to suck in cool air and exhaust hot air through and across your gpu and then up and out of the case, that might help temps,my cards run hot 70-74c when running games anyway and idle between 32-36c

"you can manually set a fan percentage"

I was looking at that. Which software do you use to tweak GPU settings? I have Asus Smart Doctor and AMD Catalyst Control Center. Not sure which one is safest to use. Do you just set the fan at 50% and leave it there? I tried it and seemed a bit loud. Good idea about getting another case fan(s) to help cool hardware.

just amd ccc,the noise depends on your card,my 5870 is loud if i set to 50% but my 5770 isnt, plus the 5870 gets 2 to 3 degrees hotter if set to a fixed fan speed than if i leave it on auto
