  • BIOS CPU temp high after setting memory XMP profile

After setting my XMP profile to 'profile1', a prompt pops up asking me 'do you want to enhance cpu performance?'. Well, of course I do! I hit enter(defaulted on 'Y') and that was that. I figured it was essentially confirming my change of memory profile. computer reboots and I enter BIOS again to make sure my memory setting hasn't changed back. On a whim I decided to check 'PC Health, etc' or something along those lines and found the CPU temp rapidly going up from ~40c to 65c! I quickly selected 'Load Optimized defaults' and saved before the temperature could go up any higher. This time I around I changed the memory profile and entered 'N' when the prompt showed up. There's no prompt when switching from default unless I 'Load Optimized defaults' first. CPU temp is hovering around 52c now.

This being my first build(and first post, sorry!), I guess I'd like to know what exactly where I messed up.

I've googled my ass off trying to get to the bottom of this and have hit a dead end. This forum has been a huge resource for me so I figure I'd start here.

    EDITED:
    MOBO: GA-Z68AP-D3
    RAM: PNY XLR8 8GB(2x4GB)
    CPU: i5-2500k
    GPU: HD6850

    PS:
Should I set my 'pch sata control mode' from IDE to AHCI if I'm running an SSD or is that something else entirely?

    ____
Apparently XMP profile changing your CPU speeds isn't uncommon and readjusting my CPU fan helped temps like someone suggested, although I'm only running stock. I had to reinstall Windows in order to use AHCI. Would've used the regedit trick but reinstalling at this point isn't going to set me back much.

Re: BIOS CPU temp high after setting memory XMP profile

Please add a detailed hardware list to your forum signature.
If your cpu heatsink isn't properly installed, cpu temperatures will be much higher.
Before you change anything, post a windows screen-shot from HWMonitor or a similar temperature monitoring program that displays all available temperature readings.

Tip: Sometimes people forget to remove the clear protective plastic film that is installed on the bottom of aftermarket cpu heatsinks.

Although I don't have an SSD, I've read that you should be in AHCI mode if using an SSD. Note, that unless you've already installed the AHCI driver, your computer will likely blue screen when switching from IDE to AHCI mode (assuming Windows was installed in IDE mode).

Re: BIOS CPU temp high after setting memory XMP profile

any overclocking with software based programs usually wont be accurate regarding voltages, nine times out of ten it will apply too much voltage to cpu, dram and qpi/vtt,for best results i would overclock through the bios and set manual voltages

for your ssd theres a simple fix you can do to switch to ahci mode without having to re-install windows, just follow this guide,i can confirm it works perfectly

You didn't mention which CPU you have, but my 2600k went from x34 to x38 when asked if I wanted to "enhance performance" when enabling XMP, with a corresponding voltage increase to do it. Those temps still seem high, if you are on the stock cooler make sure that the cooler is seated properly. Those pins suck big time.

Wish I could've responded sooner but I couldn't get on my keyboard until now. Between what I've found through google and the responses here I think I have my answers. Thanks for the help!

            It's a 2500k.

It's best to post requested information in a new post, such as your updated hardware descriptions.
It doesn't hurt to also add additional hardware information in the first post.

Let us know if you've found a solution and please post the details so that others can be helped by what you found.
