  • New to forum and computer building!! Help please!

Firstly, hello!! Thought I'd sign up to this forum for some tweaking tips later in my computers life but first I need to get it to run!!
I bought an Asus Crosshair V Formula and an FX 8120 CPU, and many other lovely bits and bobs, but I can't get it to run! It turns on, all the green voltage lights come on on the motherboard, the CPU Q check light flashes but doesn't stay on, so doesn't seem to indicate a problem with the CPU to me...but I don't get any POST beeps at all, either from the motherboard speaker or external speakers, and no output to the monitor! I've taken everything off the board, except the 24 pin and 8 pin power, the CPU and CPU fan, but still get no beeps!
I bought all the stuff off ebuyer, and one comment suggests this board needs it's bios updating before it will run any FX CPU's...is that the case?!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

if you got another PC at hand, you should be able to do it via the ROG Connection port and with the white cable that came with the mainboard. ROG Connect is turned on by default, and there should be a nice chapter about it in the manual.

Btw, what you just need is to flash the newest BIOS (or one new enough to work with the FX CPUs)
My advice - never visit a short-url, no matter who gives it to you. You can't trust any source at any time when you don't know your target

I just watched a youtube video of a guy trying to start his computer with the wrong bios chip in...but his CPU Q light was on permanently...mine just flashes like its testing ok.
I'll give the ROG connection flash a go using my ancient laptop! I'll let you know in a bit!

Re: New to forum and computer building!! Help please!

Sadly no go with the ROG connection cable. It seems you can only do that if it boots ok, or is running. After much googling, it seems a new bios chip is the next thing to cross off the list! I'm gonna call Asus in the morning and see about getting a new one.
I'll update when I know more!

dam, thats a shame. Other option, if one of your friends has a phenom II or other AM3 cpu of older generation, you could flash it with that being a temp CPU. Good luck with the support, in my experience they are very helpful.

Well I contacted Asus technical help...they said to send it back to where I bought it from! I said about replacement BIOS chips being sent out and they said that's not their policy!! So onto ebay I went thanks to wazza300 and bought this Asus Crosshair V Formula BIOS Chip Replacement | eBay which I just received half an hour ago, swapped it with the old one, which was very easy and it booted up first time with no problems!! Now to play around with it all!
