  • Temp seems too high.

I'm a little frustrated. I'm not overclocking, but I can't get chip temperatures below 53C, and they are usually around 55C.

I've got a Lian-Li 601PC case, intake right next to the CPU, two intakes in the front, exhaust on top, exhaust on the powersupply. The powersupply is an Enermax Whisper, it has 120mm intake fan on the bottom as well.
I have the Swiftech MCX-462U heatsink, and a Thermaltake Smart fan (variable 46-53CFM). The chip is an Athlon XP 2000. MB temp stays at around 39C. My room temp is at about 18C (yes, it's chilly.) I'm also using the Artic Silver III medium, which I was very careful in applying.

The case is supposed to have amazing airflow. The heatsink is supposed to be one of the top in the market. The fan is pretty powerful without being too noisy. Shouldn't I be getting lower temperatures than this?

More importantly, if I experiment with overclocking, what is the maximum safe temperature I should allow the chip to get to? When I see people complaining about running hot at 40-46C, I'm worried that I'm in the red already.

Yeah those teemps are a bit high. What are you using to moniter the temps??

      JohanWolfe,

What motherboard are we talking about here? If you're using anything Asus and using their Asus Probe, well, it is nororious for giving very unreliable results.

With the coming of the on chip diode, and motherboards that read them, I'm starting to wonder whether Asus wasn't closer to the mark to start with and I need to adjust upwards to what I'm use to. :?:

I agree wiggo, cos I now have a thermal probe mounted under my cpu and I had asus probe, an asus I-panel and the thermal probe all telling me the same m/b and cpu temp's within 1 degree.
My 1800xp constantly runs temps of 50 to 55 deg with a m/b temp of aprox 30 and air temp aprox 26.
I have an enermax case, 6 smart fans pushing and pulling and a volcano 7 with a smart fan stuck on it.Its breezy and noisey and it aint that cool!!!!!!!!
I emailed AMD about temps (acceptale) and they just said if My asus m/b has cop I shouldnt need to worry as it will shut down.
          That wasnt much help...............
I would like to o/c too but the temp has me stumped.

Yeah well my Gigabyte is givin' me temps that start to worry me but it's quite happy. Gave it it first clean out since built 6 months ago and the 7+ had developed a felt mat under the fan but it was only complainin' after 65c (Seti + game + 36c room temp = kick game out) but never did it hit the 70c shutdown limit (wound down from the default 85c).
Atm with a room temp of 32c the case is 36c and the CPU 52c while crunching a Seti unit with the Volcano 7+ at medium speed and one of the kids has only just vacated it after more than 2hrs of Diablo II but it's more than happy. A few other boards I've used lately have also shown this trend and I spose after a few more I'll be usin' the same temps for Athlons that I do for P4's. :smokin:

but that's 20C above ambient temps, as opposed to 30-35C JW is getting...

That's true to but I've never used that HSF but I believe that it really needs a 60-80cfm fan to get the best out of it. But the case temp is really what's wrong  , I try to keep the case temp to within' 5c of room temp. How do you have these case fans setup? Looks like ya either got all the air sucked out or the case is so pressurized..... :?:

Not sure guys, as soon as I setup my new computer next weekend I will see what temps I get. We can compare some more temps to see whats going on...

I'm still waitin' on a mobo for mine to see how the 2200+ fairs on an EPoX board. :(

Well it will be interesting to see what temps the EPoX board reports from the internal diode. The Gigabyte board I have is ok but could be a lot more overclocker friendly, basically I bought it because so many ppl were havin' probs with it (I got the wrong ones as I had n/p with any of them). ;)
