Well it's happening to the Japs as well Wiz - you just aren't hearing that in the U.S. (most likely) :(

Globalization, we all swim together we all sink together:(
I always feel sympathy when a factory or assembly plant closes. That's a lot of folks in one area out of work. Not many communities can begin to provide enough job opportunities to make up the difference. Usually the case is that the rest of the local economy is crimped in a big way.

These situations almost always have a huge trickle-down effect.

that Oakville, Ontario plant is about 30min from where I live - I drive by it about once a week.

What that article doesn't say it that the F150 truck is only one line in the plant - the major production is the Windstar minivan - which is still being produced at record levels.

In fact, they just built a huge new office complex at at that site - so I don't think they're hurting too bad

Actually RDR I've seen companies, plants, and even military bases go through major new construction just before they shut down.
Several reasons for that, one being - if they spend a lot of money, they think they can force the corporation/government hand too keep them open. Another is the increased price that can be asked for the property if and when they sell it. And I would guess that there would be some considerable benefits at tax-time also to spending all that money.

Beware major new construction, sometimes it can be an indicator of a rattler in the woodpile:no:

                    I hate ford.

                    I'm sorry.

I've given them two tries. One try was a Ford Escort, and the other was a Ford Bronco, and both of them eventually were Found On Road Dead.

They suck. I'm glad they are shutting down plants for more than one reason. Oh yeah, and those cars were already being cut off, so it's no big news...they've already been replaced.

You people in North American are SOOO lucky!! You've got so many car manufacturers and so many production facilities to be able to shut that many down and still have the industry survive.

Blame it on the dufus'es buying F150s for pose value. And Nobody needs a 4x4 to trasport kids...

I've had a couple Fords. The first was a '71 Maverick and the second was '80 Fairmont. Of course I got them both used. They were fun to drive. That Maverick was pretty spucky, considering only about 5 of the 8 cyls were firing.

                          I don't think I would ever buy a new one, though. ;)

Ford's market is big trucks. plain and simple. nobody can touch a full-size F350 turbo-diesel truck. they 0wn. cars, (even the Mustang to some extent) are there just to round out the company, they arent the bread and butter of the company. why focus on making a highly advanced escort that sells for 22k, topped out, or a truck that brings in 45k easy for a nice one?? the math speaks for itself, considering Ford has had the best selling series of trucks (the F-Series) since like 1980. that says something right there. what can i say, i love Ford, but I would support Chevy and *ugh* Dodge too over a damn rice burner. (Even tho the skyline, supra and RX-7 0wn me  ) :D

Whenever the time may be for you to purchase or lease a new vehicle, keep this
information in mind. You might want to give more consideration to a car manufactured by an American-owned and / or American based company. Apart from Hyundai and Volkswagen, the foreign car companies contributed nothing at all to the citizens of the United States. It's OK for these companies to take money out of this country, but it is apparently not acceptable to return some in a time of crisis. I believe we should not forget things like this. Say thank you in a way that gets their
                              attention.
