min AMD speed

buy a new mobo and cpu, and was wondering what would be the slowest speed i should think about getting. at the moment im thinking of getting a 1800+. Im on a budget but dont want to get something that is obselete...

First off youre misunderstanding the meaning of the word obsolete. Obsolete would be something that cannot be used anymore for everyday tasks. An athlon thunderbird or a low end duron is not obsolete as it will still work. Even a cpu of K6/2 or K6/3 would be good. Things below that are what you can say obsolete. Anything that you can buy on the market now are not obsolete.

Ok now in response to what you need. What exactly will you be using your PC for? AthlonXP 1800+ should suit your needs for most things that you do. My athlon thunderbird is still doing just fine. Unless your a benchmark point hungry person that athlon should do just fine. Also you can get those processors for pretty cheap now. Especially with newer processors comming out and the price constantly dropping. I would get one myself but I don't have a need to becuase my processor is still gold.

o/c to 1900 with no heat problems also this mb runs sdram

Yeah that's not a bad deal but you can get the XP1800+ for only $20aus more than the XP1600+ (which is not so easy to get here now) so I think it's a good start for ya tsunami_desu. :thumb:

Just a suggestion for the motherboard is an EPoX 8K3A as a very fast, no frills board that ya can get for around $180aus (maybe cheaper now) from Nth. Rocks Computer Markets (Sundays at Nth. Rocks Westfield) and if the darkside ever gets to you then you already have the platform to work with. :devil:

Hey n/p as that's what most of us are here for plus that board and CPU with Kingmax PC2700 C2.5 is in 80% of the PC's that I build for ppl. These usually run stock but some customers ask for the wick to be turned up (gettin' more of these lately) and a lot leave here runnin' at XP2000+ with some others at XP2100+ speed ratings very easily. ;)

I agree with everyone here. My post is about what not to buy. If you get the urge to splurge and have some more money for a better CPU, go as high as you want but dont buy the 2200+, just that model nothing else. Its the newer core before the revision. I dont like em at all, we got around to sending them back to the supplier at work.

Thanks for the tip ,what do you suggest if you dont like the 2200+ chips ,are the 2000 OK & are they O/C,able my young fella is saving his pennies for a new machine & wants max bangs for his bucks:cheers: :cheers: :cheers:

What I found when I got my XP2200+ was that the Thoroughbred "A" core is pretty much thru the range now (I was goin' for a XP2100+ Palamino core but XP1800+'s was all that was goin'). The XP2400+'s (Thoroughbred "B") are fairly plentiful now though and if you can stretch to one then do so as these are much better than the originals. ;)

yeah, i would recommend the RevB core that starts in the 2400+ and everything up, if you really want a PC now, get the 2600+ or wait a month and get the 2800+ which i think is going to perform much better with an FSB increase and synchroed ddr333 RAM. But those are also top end parts. Maybe the 2400 is just the easiest way to go, still using the thoroughbred revB core, of course. Anything cheaper? Just buy an 1800...
