It is a means of using multiple hard drives and forcing them to work in tandem to create a faster storage system in your machine. Some use it for added speed, some for the greater storage capacities, somce in a manner that allows for a full-blown mirror of the data to help prevent loss of important information.Old age and treachery will overcome youth and skill

Not in a RAID they can't, just hard drives. ;)
If the RAID controller can double as an IDE controller then in some cases yes another type of drive can be used with hard drives but no RAID. :)
