i've just gone about $25 over my limit on last months bill, and i am sick of it. i go over every month, even if i dont download anything...
what i have at the moment is Tel$tra Bigpuddle, unlim hours, 300mb download limit ( ) and i want out, now!:angryfire

i cant get cable :( and i dont have a lot of money
i'd like to get one of Optus' 255hours and unlim downloads but that is about $37 or $39 i fyou dont live in an optus cabled area..I cant win!:hmph:
i dont really want to spend more than $30 a month but even that would be better than $50 like last month
thanks in advance for ur suggestions guys...

It would be so much easier if ppl would add their location to their profile so that question doesn't have to always be asked. ;)
But have you checked your local papers as down here in Sydney there are quite a few good little ISP's around that advertise in them. :smokin:

OK wiggo, i'll break this one to you slowly. country towns & ISPs = Err, no...

in the city, you get heaps of different ISPs popping up and competing against each other. in the country areas, it's not so good.. at the moment, there are 3-4 ISPs that I know of that are within local call range in my area.. not much choice really...

Well, in country areas of Australia there is a bit of choice, but there are strict download limits (Tel$tra charge rural ISPs a fortune for bandwidth).

I have been impressed with Optus, they have a PoP in Redcliffe that should be a local call from Caboolture.

Failing that, iPrimus has the nationwide Infinity plan for $32.95/month, unlimited downloads and hours (payable 3 months in advance). The only setbacks are 4 hour sessions and 20 minute idle disconnect times.

If you sit idle 20 minutes, you may as well discon.

You'll be pleased you moved Synthetic.....

Hel$tra announced today that they are raising the charge from A$24.95/month to A$28.95/month. If you sign up for a 12-month contract, then you can still have it for $24.95/month, but why bother? :shoot:

I talked to my bud last night, and apparently this ISP is exactly that - if he signs up alot of ppl then they start payin him money

I hate Pyramid scheme stuff

is all ISP usage in AU metered? Are is that just the plans that most plp get. Cause in the states almost every provider is unlimited. I know that phone systems are different here though. Just curious

Wiggo
02-02-2002, 07:26 AM
There are a few ISP's that offer "Unlimited Downloads" but you mainly have to live in and around the major centers to obtain so not everything about our system is as bad as ya hear. But for me I'm very happy with my [email protected] cable. <img src="http://members.optushome.com.au/wiggo100/biggrinbounce2.gif">

If you live in one of Australia's 8 capital cities (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, Hobart and Darwin) you can generally get cheap "unlimited" dialup Internet. These usually have 4-hour session limits to ensure modems remain free when people want them.

I pay A$27.95/month for Optus dialup Internet, which includes UNLIMITED downloads and 120 hours per month (works out to 4 hours/day). I choose them because there are no session limits, and unused hours even roll over as well :)

But because Telstra own the vast majority of rural infrastructure, they don't allow local call access to many ISPs except their own (BigPond). This ensures that Telstra can charge A$28.95/month for a 300MB download limit, because many people in rural areas can't get anything else unless they pay for an STD call to another ISP :(

Synthetic lives in a city of about 10,000 people just north of Brisbane, and even though it is only 45KM away from the centre of Brisbane, he still pays STD (long distance) call rates to Brisbane. This makes connecting to a Brisbane-based ISP very expensive. But fortunately he can get XiS, as they now have a PoP in Caboolture :thumb:

And all across Australia all providers offer UNTIMED local phone calls - good for about a 35KM radius around your house (varies sometimes).

There you have it - a quick 101 on Internet in AUS :glasses2:

there's only 10,000ppl here??:?: never knew that...

Well unlucky that AOL isnt a choice... :( I have 2 pay 15, always connected, not disconnected like ntl every 2 hours :P unlimited downloads and guess what i leave it on 24/7 all month and still its still only great huh... free support 7 e-mails 10mb webspace :) what more could a 56k ask for... :) 15 :D

Well erm... just not have their browser!!! :| cause it sucks but i dont use it anywya unless for e-mail sending and reading etc... and to use chat room and speak 2 mates online but its very good i find dont know why people hate it?!

AOL is available in Australia, but there are several problems:

1) 20 minute idle disconnect time

2) 4 hour session limit

3) If you are in the top 10% of users (in terms of online hours), you are kicked off on an ever increasing basis to prevent you being a burden to their network

4) Credit card only - no credit card no Internet

5) To access Australian sites, your data has to go over to America and back to Australia - making for ping times of around 950ms

So many people don't use AOL - in short, it sucks. :shoot3:

Sammy
02-17-2002, 05:55 PM
Yeah, over here we have those problems too... BUT if you are a programmer (hint) and know some snealy code :P to launch a website in AOL and click the idle msg :) u are always connected thats why people say "Do u live on ure pc?!" i say no i leave the net on and i say "I dont get Disconnected like your ntl :P" heheh

Really? We're just so used to getting the raw end of the stick Internet wise here in AUS :(

Sammy
02-17-2002, 06:34 PM
Yup :) good few options on AOL i like it but i use the net somtimes and when i do its for an hour or so.. then i'll come back ina couple of hours and speak 2 someone etc... so i like AOL seeing as it's many options and i use my AOL Ilder (I made :)) to keep myself online so it saves me dialing out etc... plus it works with all AOL versions any country :)
