  • Does a Pentium 100MHz need a fan ?

The fan recently died on the table. I can get a new one but I'm wondering if it required one. It has a small heatsink but I'm not sure its enough. Does anyone know ? I know a 486 doesn't need one and a P-100 isnt far off.

It was quite common to use a passive heatsink.
The airflow through the case served well enough to draw heat off the CPU.

If you find that lacking, though it should be sufficient - you could mount a fan where it would better draw air across the fins of the heatsink.

Unless you have a rather warm environment you are operating in you will have no problems.

If the heatsink had a fan originally, I would advise replacing the fan.

If it is a case fan you are referring to, yes you need one of those.

Yes so long as aiflow is good it'll be ok as a lot of PII/III's have passive coolin'. ;)

Well this P-100 has a small sink and fan, when the fan died my
cpu did not like it at all and started to play up, it is in a desk top case so air flow is not g00d

Wiggo glances at old deskstop P166MMX crunchin' SETI

Wiggo flips up top and disconnects fan (kids don't do this at home for christ sake)

Wiggo closes top again and waits......

          1 minutes.....

5 minutes and SETI is still goin'.....

          10 minutes and...........

          nope that's enough for me

Wiggo opens up top and reconnects fan

But this case does have an intake and exhaust fan so it will work so long as ya have good case airflow.

This case only has a psu exhaust fan
and Wiggo there was only 9 minutes between my
            post and your reply :)

Ah close enough I think but I do make sure that these critters can handle it in an emergency which is why I fitted the 2 extra fans to the case. :D

just after l got it to add 16 meg of ram to the 8........whoo
a grand total of 24 meg of ram........then hdd replaced under warranty...the other was to replace the fan...... 4 years ago
might be due for a little internal dusting again :D

                have 1 for me cheers

You think thats something. check this out.
intel2 450, passive heatsink. PSU blowing air at it for cooling and no case fan. Yet its been crunchin seti almost as fast as my 750athlon!

Yes I have a few Celeries and PII's similar to that. :)

Oh if that Athlon 750 is runnin' with SDRAM then that's why it's lousey at crunchin' SETI w/u's as the memory just ain't no where near fast enough for that job. :devil win

That's all good wiggo. I'm getting 11.20/wu. Which i cant complain about. Plus the 450, plus some 20 machines at school, but they arent all the time.

and the rest of the system is going to be arriving on friday. So that will cruch some serious WU, i hope.
