What is your speaker setup? Brand/Model#? Stereo? 2.1? 5.1?
Have you configured and tested your speakers in the Control Panel --> Sound tab?
Does Windows Device Manager show any problem devices?
Have you verified that the speaker volume MUTE function is off?

Speakers are 5.1 which work fine on my other computer. Tested with headphones as well, neither works.

There are 2 USB Controller devices in device manager with warnings, but I don't know what those devices are. I've tried using automated update on them, and disabling them, neither have changed the lack of sound.

Reset bios by removing battery for a while then try again after bios config

Why would removing the battery be preferable to clearing the bios with the jumper?
And is clearing the bios likely to fix the problem?

I have pretty much the same problem [see post "Asrock Z68 Extreme4: the sound of (too much) silence"].

In addition to reinstalling drivers, etc. etc. etc. I tried several variants of Ubuntu (11.04 64 bit 'live' and installed; 32 bit installed) as well as Win 7 64 bit. I got no sound at all from on-board audio with any of these OSs.

That was enough fiddling for me. The prospect of disassembling, returning the mobo & waiting for retailer/distributer to decide what to do about this issue struck me as a bigger hassle than buying a $15 generic PCI audio card. I did that: sound fine under Win 7 and Ubuntu 11.04 64 bit. I still feel that the problem might just possibly be bios/firmware interacting with my setup, but more likely a mobo hardware defect. Bit of a disappointment; my 1st Asrock purchase might be my last.

Clearing cmos by the jumpers doesn't always work, sometimes it needs 30mins or overnight to fully clear it hence removing the mb battery

To the op,how many jack ports at the rear? 6 or 3? Those with 3 ports use different combos for 5.1 sound,it should tell you in mb manual

i take it you have right clicked on the speaker icon on your desktop and selected playback device and made sure your onboard sound is set to default and not your graphics card etc.. or the sound may go out your HDMI cable if thats what you are using????

Pretty much your very last chance if nothing else helps - try it!
Jumper reset usually does not clear the device "pool" so battery removal (for ~30min) is a better/deeper reset.

There are 6 ports on the back.
I've adjusted the properties of the speaker configuration, and tried different combination without any sound working at all, though it always looks like it does, with the volume meter moving during testing.

yep, I've made sure the speakers are the default device and not any other. I'd tried uninstalling / disabling other devices like the AMD HDMI output without any success.

I did buy a usb sound device to use while I work this out, and it works fine, though it is pretty crap and I'd prefer to have the real sound working. It does tell me that there isn't a windows setting disabling sound, just something stopping the onboard.

Thanks for the suggestions. Will try the CMOS next I think, but in the middle of assignments so might wait until I have some time where I don't need my computer to play with it some more.

Do you get any sound through the front panel headphone socket? If you didn't want the hassle of rma you could purchase a cheap pci-e or pci sound card? I can recommend the asus xonar dx,or maybe a cheaper one? I would still try and download/install ms universal sound bus driver, you have exact same thing I had in xp though,I could see the sound bar moving up and down but no sound until I installed that driver
