Well I tried removing the battery, which cleared the cmos, but still no success. I've tried using the front ports on the case, but no joy there either.

Will try and find the driver again since I'm out of ideas. Don't think returning it is an option, so if nothing else works, buying a sound card seems to be the only option.

Well it looks like I got it working

I decided to disable the onboard sound since it wasn't working and figured it would avoid any conflicts.
After that, I decided to disable the onboard video, for the same reason since I was using graphics cards. This gave me the idea that maybe the onboard video was taking control of the sound for some reason, figured it was a long shot but what the hell. Left the onboard video disabled, and turned the onboard sound back on. Booted up and it was working.

Not sure if it was specially the onboard video, or just leaving the onboard sound disabled for a while that did it, but it now works.

Was either of these something obvious that I should have known to do straight away? Nothing in the manual seemed to indicate that sound needed to have video disabled, or go through a disable / re-enable cycle. Jasss, maybe you could try also to see if it helps you?

That's why I didn't really think of it, since I didn't have any monitor connected to the onboard, let alone via HDMI.
I did try and disable any HDMI sound devices I saw in playback devices, which were all my graphic cards, but that didn't help.

Oh well, works now, so I'm happy.
Thanks for everyone's helps and suggestions

    Hey mate,

I have the same problem as you. How do did you disable the on board video from the bios? I can only enable/disable on board sound.

Any assistance would be much appreciated. Right now considering whether to return my board back to MSY.

    Cheers,
    Sand

hehe, I got mine from MSY also!

In the bios its the IGD - I'm assuming internal graphics device. I just disabled all of those, pretty sure they are in the same section as the audio device.
Also, I'm not 100% sure that is the fix. It might have been disabling the audio, booting up, shutting down / powering down, then enabling the audio again to do a complete fix. Kind of did both at the same time, and it started working so stopped playing with it.

Unfortunately - hasnt worked out for me. Asrock techsupport isnt really that helpful either. I ended up connecting my HD6950 to my LCD monitor via HDMI and connecting my speakers to the output on my lcd monitor. I guess this is manageable. Damn... was really hoping to use the on board THX certified audio.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but this is the best place on the net I could find with people that had a similar problem to mine. I have tried everything in this thread, but none of it has worked. The only difference I have from the rest of these guys is that I have a ASRock Extreme3 Gen3 instead of an Extreme4, but I'm having the exact same problem.

It's so damned weird, the Realtek drivers see that I have my headphones and mic plugged in to the board and it seems like everything is working, but there is literally zero sound making it to the headphones. It's almost like the jack is bad, but I just bought the damn thing 2 days ago. It was working yesterday, but I booted it up this morning and now there's zero sound. It's damn infuriating. The headphones do work as well, so I have no idea what else I can do besides getting a separate sound card.

Anyone out there find out how to fix this?

Double check your settings in the Realtek sound manager and verify that all the settings are correct.
Also check the SOUND settings in the windows Control Panel, as well as the windows volume/mute settings.
    Are your speakers working properly?

Yeah, just like the other guys, everything looks normal inside the Realtek manager. When I plug in my headphones it tells me; everything acts completely normal but there's no sound. It's almost like there's no power making it to the headphones from the jack.
