    Default PCI-E 3.0 & Extreme7 Gen3 Question

    ASRock > Products > Z68 Extreme7 Gen3 <----- Product Specifications > Expansion/Connectivity > Slots

    ASRock PCIE Gen3 series

Looking at the specs on that board for the PCI-E 3.0 slots it looks like it only has one PCI-E 3.0 x16 slot...there's an asterisk next to it. So does this board only support a single PCI-E 3.0 slot?

    - 5 x PCI Express x16 slots (single at PCIE 3.0* x16 (PCIE2) mode, dual at PCIE 2.0 x16 (PCIE1) / PCIE 2.0 x16 (PCIE4) mode, or tripple at PCIE 2.0 x16 (PCIE1) / PCIE 2.0 x8 (PCIE4) / PCIE 2.0 x8 (PCIE6) mode; PCIE5: PCIE 2.0 x4 mode)

yes.. thats why i got the fatility z68.. it will have 2 slots at v3.0+cpu upgrade.. at the moment it v2.0 (x16 slots) run at 16 + 0 or 8 +8... not sure if it gets full 16x+ 16x v3.0 in future or 8+8+ v3.0 in future?

    "Z68 Extreme7 Gen3" possible combinations:
    1-single: v3.0x16 (PCIE2)
    2-dual: v2.0x16 (PCIE1) & v2.0x16 (PCIE4)
    3-tripple: v2.0x16 (PCIE1) & v2.0x8 (PCIE4) & v2.0x8 (PCIE6)
    4-single: v2.0x4 (PCIE5)

    "Fatal1ty Z68 Professional Gen3" possible combinations:
    1-single: v3.0x16 (PCIE2)
    2-single: v3.0x8 (PCIE4)
    3-dual: v3.0x16 (PCIE2) & v3.0x8 (PCIE4)
    4-single: v2.0x4 (PCIE5)

As you see, For single mode they are the same. for dual mode, "Fatal1ty" has advantage but not so much because v3.0x8 equals to v2.0x16. For tripple mode, "Extreme" is the only option.

Does this mean SLI with 2 x 480GTX's won't work unless I use slot 1 and 4. I currently have the bridge with an EK spacer that only allows fitment in slot 2 and 4, one card is not visible even to Windows.

Yes; It seems that these modes require SLI/CrossFireX cards have 3x space between each other.

My three slot bridge arrived today and all is well in SLI land, even with the third GPU as a physx card.

    Thanks.
