Angry 6970 Crossfire on Extreme7 Gen3 Poor Performance.

    *** 9/30/2011***
My CrossfireX is working well, great performance, but had issues getting it to work right.
I believe it was driver installation/configuration on this motherboard as the root cause, but it works without too much effort.
    Enjoy the Extreme7 Gen3!
    ------------------------------------------

I just upgraded to the Extreme7 Gen3 w/i7-2600K from an Asus Rampage Extreme w/qx9770.

It's a 3 year jump in tech and as expected everything is faster, except my CrossfireX on my two Asus 6970's.

I went from a Windows Experience Index of 7.4 on the video to 6.0! It's such a big drop games are having problems...

GPU-Z reports both cards running on x16 as expected due to the NF200.

    Ugg...

Completely wiped ATI software then re-installed, re-seated crossfire bridge, re-seated power connectors, re-seated cards. Disabled Crossfire, rebooted, enabled Crossfire, rebooted. No luck.

I seem to be getting single card performance as I am getting the same benchmark with Crossfire enabled and disabled. I'm using Windows Experience to see this, but I am playing Battlefield Bad Company to test the feel of the graphics I've been used to playing on with these cards for the last 6 months on my old motherboard, the game simply lags now, not as responsive.

Lightbulb Re: 6970 Crossfire on Extreme7 Gen3 Poor Performance.

So I uninstalled the drivers, pulled one 6970 out of my machine, installed the drivers to that single card...

WHOA! Never seen my graphics test so high! 7.9 on Windows experience, BF3 running in full graphics mode smooth as ice, single Asus EAH 6970 rocks.

    CrossfireX is hosed lol

I never tested a single card on my old system before, but it was working great in CrossfireX so never thought to try. I just topped the charts in performance on this ASRock Z68, i7-2600K, 16gb DDR3 Mushkin Redline system with a single EAH 6970 though.

Thoughts on the CrossfireX issue would still be good as I intend on trying to make it work.

i dont think wei recognizes crossfire/sli,it just rates it for one card

for xfire you have to install one card, install drivers add second card and then it might let you enable xfire in ccc,if it doesnt keep both cards installed and uninstall drivers and re-install then it should let you enable xfire

Hi, thanks for the reply. My old system I got a much better rating using the same cards in Crossfire using WEI, I don't think it matters if it's one card or two in the report, but the speed dropping to 6.0 clearly demonstrates performance being hit. The real issue is poor performance in games on this new rig, pulled one card and shazaam smooth as ice and 7.9 on WEI. I'm actually mid-stream of testing the single card install, then adding the next card, and configuring. It was allowing me to enable CrossfireX, but something was definately not right.

This mobo with i7-2600k and a single 6970 is so fast I'm thinking about not bothering with CrossfireX lol.

I'll post again after I finish the 2nd card installation to report results.

you probably just installed it incorrectly or drivers the first time as 7.9 should be the max with that card, not 6,ive seen users with cards in xfire with the same score as a single card so i dont think xfire is rated in wei

makesure to fully disable integrated graphics as some mb's share or switch between igpu and dedicated graphic cards depending on load

The Extreme7 Gen3 has built in graphics and Lucid Virtu, but I don't see a method to disable the mobo graphics. There's nothing in the setup, and I thought that's odd, but maybe it's just the way the new tech works with Lucid Virtu.

Apparently I did just install it wrong, complete removal of drivers and re-installation didn't matter. What I had to do was install with a single card, then put the other card in. Walla. WEI is now 7.9 with a single card or with CrossfireX, but more importantly games are working properly.

I've been running CrossfireX for a year now on my Asus Rampage Extreme, and I always just removed the drivers and installed the new ones, never had a hitch.

Does this mean when I upgrade drivers I really need to remove the drivers and shutdown, remove one card and boot up, install the new drivers to a single card, shut down and then add the 2nd card in? I upgrade drivers monthly :D Never had to do that on the old mobo, but maybe I didn't have it running right there either lol.

I'm glad this is SOLVED and working. Thanks! Extreme7 Gen3 working flawlessly now

you should just be able to install over current drivers,no need to uninstall,i dont run xfire but it works fine for me,just download drivers install and restart pc

i think with lucid you cant disable it as its designed to run off igpu for light loads and graphics card for heavy loads ect,

    Hi again,

Not removing the Catalyst drivers and CCC before installing new ones is asking for trouble from my experience. I've always wanted to take this shortcut approach, and do it, but AMD recommends removal first. I can tell you first hand I've upgraded without removal, but some glich always brings me back to removing them and installing fresh.

well you can uninstall first and install newer drivers,i dont think you would need to remove any cards, not sure but i think its when you first enable xfire you have to add one card at a time, ive never had any trouble installing over old drivers, ati drivers are much improved now from what they used to be,but its best to uninstall first to be safe
