Default Need help choosing a heatsink for my Asrock 970 Extreme3

I am having great difficulty finding a heatsink for my motherboard that clears my set of 4 x 4gb G.skill ram which have a tallish ram sink on them. all big heatsinks seem to cover the first ram slot and only allow very short ram.

anyone suggest a really good heatsink for my 8120 which is very hot. 43c idle near 70c load. It seems to be throttling down cpu speeds to keep temperatures in check.

    Thanks for any help

    CoolerMaster

GeminII S524 features a larger Heat sink for improved cooling performance, and increased memory module clearance to support high end memory modules featuring large Heat sinks of their own. It comes equipped with a modular 120mm fan with an ideal noise performance ratio throughout its supported range of rpm. It can be upgraded to a 140mm fan to further boost its cooling performance or opt for a super low noise, low rpm fan.

Corsair Hydro Series : H80 or H100. Suitable Air coolers : ProlimaTech Armageddon or similar slim coolers. Not sure for Thermalright True Spirit 140, first slot may be blocked.

That Gemin II looks like a nice HTPC cooler, but not sure it would be big enough for this 8-core 8120. It runs very hot. It sure is hard to find a good cooler that doesn't hit the ram. I seen a couple that I could moiunt the fan on the rear of the heatsink. there are a lot of push/pull available.

No room for a water cooler as I have a bench case and no where to mount the radiator.

I have been looking at the Prolimatech haetsinks. I had one before and they work great. was hoping to spend under $50 (I have a $50 gift card from x-mas), but Prolimatech's don't come with fan and would add to the cost.

May get the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO with exposed heatpipe base and mount fan on rear, but I think it may still interfere with first memory slot. I have looked at so many heatsinks the past few days I have them all mixed up :P

Thanks for all of the suggestions.

I decided to get the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO. It has support for dual fans if I need extra cooling.

It keeps my heat down considerably, but I still have overheating issues as my CPU keeps throttling down on me and won't run a full 3.1GHz on full load. It runs normally between 2.8GHz - 3.1GHz at all times. and if I hit 53C it throttles all cores down to 1.4GHz.

    Maybe a bad cpu?

Yes, I disabled all the power saving features. C6, turbo, cool 'n quiet, and APM so far. I called Newegg and they are cross shipping me a new CPU, but not sure it will fix anything. I think it is a faulty CPU design. Hopefully it's just a BIOS fix, but this thing throttles down at 53C and seem to be a common issue.

I'm not finding much info yet as there seem to be very few users with these chips since they got such bad initial reviews.

Hopefully the next chip is better binned and run much cooler. Some posts say some of the high end boards have better luck. maybe I'll upgrade, or just switch back to Intel. I'd really like 8-cores and to support AMD. They need to stay in business to keep Intel from charging $4000 for their 8-core processors. :P

    Hopefully something gets fixed soon.
