Question Re: Asrock 970 Extreme3 and FX-8120 keeps throttling and I'm not overclocking.

Have either of you checked out AMD Support & Drivers to see if they can offer any help and/or suggestions?

Actually, that is the first place I went. Second reinstall I used ASRock drivers.

I think I'll try a different board. I was gonna try the ASRock 990 board, but now I may just pay twice the price and go back to Gigabyte.

Anyone know ASRock tech support phone for USA? Maybe they have a new beta BIOS to try. I just can't sit around waiting for patches and fixes. I need my computer now.

This second board is so horrible. I get stutter and lag very bad. I loaded the drivers and it improved a little, but now it wont wake from sleep/hibernate anymore.

Send a PM to ASRock TSD - Emily and see if she can help you with a beta bios or ASRock phone number.

IIII Think i have stumbled accros the solution. i have been checking various components of my board and iv noticed that my mosfets are very hot when iam @ full load so i grabbed a few fans and pointed then at the mosfet cooler and whala throttling @ 57.... moved the fans then throttling @ 53C/ Mosfets control Voltage ect ect so it would make sense that when over chocking the wattage throught the cpu would be very high so alot of power is being pushed throught those mosfets and when the ovrheat they go in2 cooldown to protect themselvs. i do actualy think this is the issue because even on this high end board the heatsink isnt very big and all the other heatsinks are cool(northbridge +south. I have also ran my pc throught stress test and unplugged my pump and it got over 60C without throttling so it must be another part not having a change to over heat to clock its self back = not the cpu(possible mosfet cooling issue) that it the only part of my motherboard that is getting very very hot. so iv orderd some thermaletake mosfet heatsinks i will post on here if i get a Better result.

Thumbs up Re: Asrock 970 Extreme3 and FX-8120 keeps throttling and I'm not overclocking.

For what it's worth, I experimented with VRM heatsink cooling on my MSI N460GTX video card and added a 92mm Arctic Cooling PWM fan to help cool the back side of the video card. MSI N460GTX Hawk (1GB) Overclocking Results, post #55 is the start of my VRM cooling information.

Temperatures were measured using an infrared digital thermometer.
Using a cooling fan blowing directly on aluminum or copper heatsinks on your motherboard should provide even better mosfet cooling.
Here are some summary results using none, aluminum, and copper VRM heatsinks:

I already tried several fans on the motherboard. I don't know where CPUTIN is located on the motherbard and the CPU temp is much lower. So, I randomly placed fans around the board (3 fans) they didn't seem to make a difference. I don't overclock, so I don't imagine heat was actually the cause. I think it was more the throttle limits were set too low. Did you try your system with stock heatsink and stock speeds to see if you get the same issues as I do? also, Enzotec makes some nice mosfet coolers. MOS-C1: Newegg.com - Enzotech MOS-C1 C1100 Forged Copper Heatsinks only There are a set of 10 and all copper. 6.5mm x 6.5mm and 12mm tall. They come with very good 3M thermal pads. also, the newer mosfets are digital and are suppose to handle very high heat just fine. although, components around them may not. If there is no new BIOS, I think I'm just going to send this board back. Maybe the bulldozer as well. I need a working system fast and it's been a month and time is running out. Good luck -=Mark=-

Default Re: Asrock 970 Extreme3 and FX-8120 keeps throttling and I'm not overclocking.

I returned this board and got a GigaByte GA-970A-UD3 and the CPUTIN is stable and it doesn't throttle down at 53C anymore.

However, it still throttles down under load of Prime95 and IntelBurnTest, but HyperPI doesn't. I know HyperPI is a lot less stressful but it does take up a lpot of CPU time. I can't even stop the program as it freezes the mouse from the high load.

Does anyone know what CPUTIN is for this board? It seems to be the issue. I thought it was the mosfets, but after putting a 120mm fan directly on the heathink, it never lowered the temperatures. I also placed the fan around the motherboard, and even added multiple fans around the board, but CPUTIN never went down.

I think if we find the CPUTIN location, we may find the solution to this issue. After two different boards with the same problem, I assume the CPUTIN airflow may be blocked causing it to overheat.

Please let me know if you find the CPUTIN location. I really liked this board and would buy it again if I could fix this issue. or hopefully a new revision becomes available with the issue resolved. I'm assuming since two bad boards in a row means it may be a manufacturing issue.

    Thanks for everyone's help

With your Gigabyte board, see what EasyTune6 shows:
    GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket AM3+ - GA-970A-UD3 (rev. 1.x) :: Utility Downloads
    version: B11.1209.1 (17.90 MB) 2011/12/16
The ET6 version on your mobo DVD is probably older.

You can also try using different monitoring software programs (e.g. HWMonitor, SpeedFan, AIDA64, etc.).
In the past, I've found that some monitoring programs provide "better" names.

All of the programs I used for monitoring just say things like, CPU, System, TMPINI, etc.

None say where they are located. It would be nice to pinpoint where it is to inspect and possibly fix.

The gigabyte is holding up good so far. It only throttles and stress test programs and usually to 2.8GHz to 3.0GHz. I even tried overclocking all the way up to 4.1GHz and it still throttles, but now at 4.1GHz it usually throttles to 3.4GHz, so it seems to scale.

Maybe it is an issue with Prime95/Intel Burn Test? although I haven't seen other posts on it yet. Of course there aren't many posts on these Bulldozers from all the neg reviews. But, more come out everyday, so hopefully the kinks get worked out soon.

Did Et6 also have confusing names?
Maybe you can compare the bios PC Health displayed temps with windows idle temps?
I have an inexpensive Harbor Freight digital infrared laser thermometer that is accurate and gives consistent results.
