[QUOTE=proflim;414196)Can you exchange your current video card for a different video card brand or model?[/QUOTE]

Unfortunately it was bought (new) off an Ebay trader who went to great lengths to point out his stringent Returns Policy. Can't see him being particularly sympathetic if I return a perfectly good card just cos it may or may not be imcompatible with my PC.

And I'm still left with the conundrum that I don't know which cards WILL work and when my only way to find out is to "buy one and see", it becomes a potentially very expensive proposition.
I've already had to pay over the odds to find RAM and a CPU that suit the motherboard AND offer a worthwhile upgrade over the original parts. If I also lose money messing about trying to find a suitable CPU I'll end up worse off than if I'd just bought a new PC

The only way to be reasonably sure is by testing with different components. If you could test with the "donor" system's psu installed in your system, that might help. You could pay a shop to test your system, but that doesn't come cheap.

In a recent thread, the OP couldn't borrow any hardware to test with. His only option was to have a local shop test his hardware before he paid for out of warranty service to fix his apparently dead motherboard. I suggested that he include his power supply when he brought his system to the shop. In his case, his psu was at fault and the rest of his hardware was fine.

I don't know what your consumer rights are on your side of the pond. Try contacting the seller and tell him you want to swap your video card for a similar brand/model. You might include a link to this thread so that he can see everything that you've tried.

I've been around the block more times than most (i.e. younger) forum members and I've long since learned that you win some and you lose some. At this point it is one of three things; user error, faulty hardware, or hardware incompatibility. From your testing it looks like user error is not the cause unless your motherboard requires some out of the ordinary electrical connections. Re-read your mobo user manual as if you were a newbie who has never installed a video card before. Sometimes getting back to basics will fix things where a required step wasn't done.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained; it can't hurt to ask.

    Thanks ProfJim

Regarding consumer rights over here, they pretty much go out the window where Ebay is concerned. There is a small amount of protection from being sold a duff product but even the best sellers would be unlikely to accept a return about 6 weeks after it was originally shipped unless there was something physically wrong with the item.

As for user error, I'm the first to admit that I'm no expert and regularly miss the obvious when searching for the exotic..... but on this occasion I honestly believe that I've gone over everything enough times to be pretty certain that its not (just) me that's wrong. The fact that another graphics card (albeit a less potent one) plugs in and works effortlessly (no bios changes, no special settings, no bother.... it just works) is enough to lead me to believe that this is a compatability issue.

I'm hoping that Emily can provide some insight..... if I haven't upset her too much with my earlier Spam attack
