Default Asrock 2core1066-2.13G mobo with XFX Radeon HD 6770 850M GPU

    Hi

I'm in the process of upgrading my stepson's pc so that it's better equipped for gaming. However, having upgraded the CPU, RAM and PSU without too much difficulty, I've hit a problem with the graphics card. The previous card (an NVIDIA 8500GT) was working fine but the replacement isn't being recognised at all.

When its installed, the bios (which I've confirmed is the latest version) just reverts back to the onboard graphics and acts as though the new card isn't even there. I've tried playing with the graphics and PCI-E related BIOS settings and confirmed that the new card is getting power (enough to drive its cooling fan anyway).

The new 600W power supply should be powerful enough to crank the hardware (it has dedicated Graphics Card connectors) so I'm at a loss to understand why I'm not getting any signs of life from it.

My first question is, are there any known compatibility issues with this combo?

Secondly, can anyone think of any other reason for this apart from a faulty graphics card? (I'll be trying it in a donor machine shortly but I need to track one down with the right power supply plugs)

And finally, just in case I've been unlucky enough to receive TWO duff power supplies in a row, can anyone point me in the direction of some information that would tell me what sort of voltage I should be seeing from the relevant pins on a 6-Pin PCI-E connector?

OK so I've just tried the card in a donor machine and it worked fine!

So basically I have a card that works but not in this motherboard and a motherboard that works with other cards.... what gives?

Any help, advice, guidance, etc. gladly received. What are my next steps?

Are you using the latest BIOS?
If so and that didn't help you need to PM ASRock tech rep Emily and point her at this thread.

    Oops, I almost forgot.

    PSU colors:
    Black - negative
Yellow to any black - 12v
Red to any black - 5v
Orange to any black - 3.3v
Purple to any black - 5v standby (on even when the computer is off).

PCIe cables are 12v (yellow - black).

Those are the common ones used on a modern board.

What is the brand/model of your power supply?
Can you borrow a psu to test with?

Thanks for the info guys. I've PM'd Emily, so hopefully she can help.

The PSU is brand new and the main reason I replaced it is because the card wasn't working with the previous PSU. It's an Alpine Silent Power 600W. It's not a particularly expensive one (a decision I'll probably end up regretting) but I've just put a voltmeter over it and I'm getting 12.4v across all pins of the GPU connector. The card worked in the donor machine which only has a cheap and cheerful 350W PSU and I had to use molex to 6-pin adaptors!

To be absolutely honest, I discovered after my last post that the BIOS wasn't actually up to date (v1.0 instead of v1.1) but I've now updated it, gone through the same process of trial and error with the settings and still no joy with the new card....

    OOPS!

Apologies to Emily for bombarding her with messages.....

I hadn't enabled the "Keep a copy of Sent messages" option in my profile. So when I sent her a message then checked my Sent items to make sure it had been delivered, it was showing nothing.... so I kept trying DOH!

Can you borrow another power supply to test with?
This might help to confirm that your current psu is OK.
On rare occasions, some power supplies have compatibility issues with some motherboard models.

Using a digital multi-meter (DMM) isn't an adequate test, it can only show that one or more of the psu power rails is faulty.
Can you borrow a similar or higher end video card to test in your system?

I've already tried the graphics card with the original PSU that was in the PC. When it didn't work I ordered this new PSU. I've also confirmed that it DOES work with the PSU in the donor pc.

Everything is pointing to a compatibility issue between this mobo and the card. If I was certain I could find a similar performance card that definitely WOULD work, I'd replace this one. My problem is that on paper at least, there shouldn't be any issues between these two bits of kit.

It could be an issue with your new power supply, but your best bet is probably to buy a similar card in your price range.
Can you exchange your current video card for a different video card brand or model?
