Default ASRock 970 Extreme3 Strange Black Screen Issue

    Hello,
I'm hoping someone can lend a hand as I'm starting to be a bit puzzled.

I built a new rig for a buddy last week. The build is as follows:
    ASRock 970 EXTREME3 Motherboard
    AMD FX-4100 Zambezi 3.6GHz AM3+ Processor
    CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600
    HIS IceQ X Radeon HD 6870 1GB
    Seagate Barracuda ST500DM002 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s HDD
    RAIDMAX HYBRID 2 RX-630SS 630W ATX12V V2.2/ EPS12V PSU
    LG 22X DVD Burner

    Here is the scoop:
I built the machine a little over a week ago. On the initial boot it wasn't posting so I checked the connectors, reseated the RAM and voila it posted. I installed Windows and configured the machine (also immediately flashed to BIOS 1.20). It runs like a top when it's running; plays SWTOR on max with ease.

I went to bed after the initial configuration and the next day was a torture test extravaganza. MemTest for 4 hours; Prime for 6 hours and FurMark for 4 hours. Rock solid stability with wonderful temps to boot. I was very pleased with the build and just about ready to hand it over to my buddy.

The next morning something told me to power it on to give it one last check up. I booted it up, it got to the Win 7 loading screen and then the monitor went black. The monitor LED stayed blue as if there were a signal but the machine was locked up tight. I rebooted it and the screen went black right after POST. On the third reboot it didn't even seem to post; the fans were spinning but no one was home - black screen with no BIOS logo.

I popped off the side case, moved the HDD SATA cable to a different port and it booted. After that I figured it had to be something with the SATA3 controller so I tweaked the settings in the BIOS a bit. I rebooted a few times, let it sit unplugged for 5 minutes a few times and it booted great every time.

I gave it to my buddy and he used it every day for about a week. That includes a couple 5+ hour SWTOR sessions and working from home Tuesday - Friday.

Today he called me and he got the black screen (DOH!). Same condition: it went black booting Windows and then got progressively worse until it wouldn't post. I had him move the HDD SATA cable to a different port and sure enough it booted and he's been playing SWTOR for an hour now problem free.

I'm stumped. I'm thinking it could be a couple things but any insight would be greatly appreciated.

    1. Could it possibly be a little incompatibility with the Zambezi chip on the 970 Extreme3? It's newer hardware so maybe there's a BIOS update on the horizon?
    2. A problem with the SATA controller or Hard disk (even though when it's running it's flawless)?

It can't be a power issue because he can play games hard without issue. Help!

did you notice whether it only did this from a cold boot up? once up and running and warm no more problems? what did you set dram voltage to?

Seems to only happen cold. It's just funny how it's locked up tight until you move the HDD SATA cable...

The BIOS is mostly default other than the HDD config. I didn't touch the clocks or anything with this build; I wanted it to be as reliable as possible in the long term.

I did think perhaps it could be a memory incompatibility. I was hoping not as I don't have any to test it with.

The RAM is Corsair Vengance Model: CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9

Edit - Thanks for the help BTW! :)

yes thats the same kit im using, cold boot issues are usually ram related, you can use one click more dram voltage than 1.5v just to see if it improves,i dont know what you adjust for cpu northbridge voltage on amd systems but might need one or two clicks more,or you could simply pm View Profile: ASRock TSD - Emily - TweakTown Forums and see what she has to say or if she has a beta bios for you to test

are you using xmp profile for ram? could try setting up manually and see if it improves

You might test to see if using SLEEP or HIBERNATE helps as a temporary work around until you can solve the problem.
Try testing with a different sata cable and make sure that both cable ends are secure and not working themselves loose.

I could be totally wrong but isn't that ram specifically for intel? Vengeance® says nothing about AMD compatibility

I'm actually pretty good at tweaking AMD machines so I'll see what I can do with the voltages. I just never expected this build to necessitate voltage changes with all stock clocks.

    Thanks!

I don't think they're working loose but I do have some spare cables to try.

Corsair's site says it should work with all dual channel DDR3 boards.... hmm...
