Default [SOLVED] Windows 7 64bit shows 3.73GB usable memory with 8GB installed

I have two sticks of 4gb PNY RAM (8gb total) installed in an Asrock A75M FM1 motherboard with an A8-3850 APU, which supports 16GB of RAM. I've already updated my BIOS, thinking that may be it, but it didn't work.

Windows 7 as well as my BIOS show that 8GB of RAM is installed, but only 3.73 is usable. Another 4375MB shows up in Windows as "Hardware Reserved".

I've looked on the AsRock FAQ which says that on other boards there is a "BIOS / Advanced / Chipset Configuration / Memory Remap Feature", but this isn't in my BIOS (A75M P1.70).

How can I get the other 4GB of RAM to be usable?

Question Re: Windows 7 64bit shows 3.73GB usable memory with 8GB installed

From the mobo user manual and the ASRock website:
    - Max. capacity of system memory: 16GB*
*Due to the operating system limitation, the actual memory size may be less than 4GB for the reservation for system usage under Windows® 32-bit OS. For Windows® 64-bit OS with 64-bit CPU, there is no such limitation.

I'm not familiar with AMD systems, but it sounds like you might be running a 32-bit windows version.
Might be worth a quick check to verify that your aren't running a 32-bit version.

    It's 64 bit.

OK, it was a bit of a long shot, hopefully this is a bios issue.
Send a private message to ASRock TSD - Emily and ask for her help.

The missing part of the memory is allocated for GPU Video RAM.

    Thanks, I'll try that.

That explains the 256mb being used up, it doesn't explain the other 4GB.

This is due to a setting in the BIOS. Do you have a video card installed along with your IGP? Windows will reserve the ram amount equivalent to your video card ram unless memory hole remapping is enabled in your BIOS. (That is what it is called on my ASUS board anyway)

As a test, I looked at the HW monitor myself - with memory hole remapping disabled, there was 1GB hardware reserved. (same as my 6870 video card memory). When I enabled it, the amount reserved went to 0.037GB

Check with ASRock tech support about possible hidden bios settings.
With Gigabyte boards, the only way to access hidden settings is to press CTRL+F1 at the main bios screen.
Maybe ASRock has a similar bios feature that will "unhide" the memory remap setting.

Reseat the CPU & RAM. Check the MSCONFIG utility and make sure the "MAXMEM" option in the boot tab in unchecked.

If you hover over the description for "hardware reserved" it confirms the reply I sent above.
