Default SSD Benchmarks on ASRock Z68 Extreme7 Gen3

    I recently upgraded to the ASRock Z68 Extreme7 Gen3.

I also ordered a 240GB OCZ Vertex 3 SSD to replace my 120GB OCZ Vertex 3 SSD. I decided since I was going to upgrade I should run benchmarks on both the Z68 intel SATA chipset as well as the ASMedia SATA Chipset.

    Notes:

I ran an Ubuntu LiveCD, and installed Windows 7 on the 120GB SSD.

Since the 120GB SSD was also the system disk it may have skewed the results somewhat for comparing to the 240GB drive, but the Intel vs ASMedia results should be accurate.

I should also mention, when I installed the drive was connected to the Intel chipset, I was able to set the ASMedia ports as bootable in the BIOS and simply swap the connection, and the system still booted just fine. So, if you install on one device, you may not have any problems swapping to another in the future.

    Ubuntu Live CD Benchmarks:

    Notes:

I only had access to HDParm, if anyone knows of a good alternative I will be glad to rerun the tests for more details.

Most results were within 10MB/sec of eachother, so I only ran 2 HDParm stats for each. The only exception was the 240GB Drive on the intel chipset, which had a difference of over 100MB/sec, however, even the slower score was still way faster than the ASMedia. The ASMedia had a better read speed on the 120GB Drive than the 240GB drive, not sure why.

    OCZ Vertex 3 120GB SSD:

    ASMedia:

    Intel:

    Timing buffered disk reads: 1406 MB in 3.00 seconds = 468.43 MB/sec

    Windows 7:

    Notes:

I used the AS SSD benchmark, it was easy to download, use, and find. It also seems to be the most common benchmark image I've found online.

I could only attach one image per post, so I am going to post four follow-up posts with each of these:

    120GB Intel
    120GB ASMedia
    240GB Intel
    240GB ASMedia

    Conclusion:

Using the ASMedia chipset for your boot drive is slower, and will increase boot times since it has to load it during POST.

The 240GB drive seems to be substantially faster than the 120GB drive, while the 120GB was the OS Drive, I cannot imagine that alone making such a big difference in the speed tests.

Provided you have an SSD, either one of the ports is bound to be quick as lightning compared to a HDD.

    The final one, 240GB ASMedia:

I hope these benchmarks are useful to you, and feel free to add any of your own, or suggestions for better Linux tests, I will gladly run them on the 240GB.
