    Default Z68 Extreme4/7 3 x SataII RAID0 On Southbridge.. possible?

    Hi all,

Looking at replacing my failing mobo with a nice new ASrock (this time)..

I do however wish to re-use as many components from my old i7 920 PC as possible..

Currently i have 3 x SATA2 SDD's in a RAID0 stripe as my OS / Boot , and a SATA3 7200rpm for user data. I'd like to use that same setup again.. All the ASrock manuals i've seen make reference to RAID0 as 2 drive.. (which would make sense if trying to do on the 2 x SATA3 ports, however i'd be doing it on 3 of the 4 SATA2 ports)

    Clues anyone?

    From the manual:

2 x SATA3 6.0 Gb/s connectors, support RAID (RAID 0,RAID 1, RAID 10, RAID 5, Intel Rapid Storage and IntelSmart Response Technology), NCQ, AHCI and "Hot Plug"functions- 2 x SATA3 6.0 Gb/s connectors by Marvell SE9120,support NCQ, AHCI and "Hot Plug" functions (SATA3_M2 connector is shared with eSATA3 port)

4 x SATA2 3.0 Gb/s connectors, support RAID (RAID 0,RAID 1, RAID 10, RAID 5, Intel Rapid Storage and IntelSmart Response Technology), NCQ, AHCI and Hot Plug functions

....you can use the following steps to perform a migration from a single non-RAID configuration to a two drive RAID 0, RAID 1 configuration or three drive RAID 5 configuration.

you would just connect them to the intel sata2 ports and your sata3 hdd to the intel sata3 port and carry on as normal?

EDIT, or like you said put all 3 drives on the sata2 ports if theres four sata2 ports youll be ok,forgive me not too hot on raid

Correct, yes, but the ASRock RAID guide says .. "two drive RAID 0, RAID 1 configuration or three drive RAID 5 configuration" Is there some limitation with Z68 that doesnt allow 3 or 4 drive RAID 0 ??

Yes you will "Should" have no issues at all. If your current raid setup is on Sata2 I would stick with Sata2 and it should be plug and boot. Even if you go from sata2 to sata3 it should still be the same Intel raid rom that is controlling them. Worst case you would have to recreat the array and reinstall windows.

But you should have no problems with either way running 3 ssd raid0 on a asrock or any intel based motherboard.

When they mention raid0 -1 2 drives and raid5 3 drives thats just the default "Ideal" configuration. You could have a 6ssd raid 0 if you wanted or had the money :)

i think its just the basic raid as in 2 drive setup,i think you can use 3 or 4 without issue,im not sure though as im using an asus z68,best way would be to ask an asrock rep or wait for someone who knows more on this,i dont think theres any chipset limitation

just wondered why your not waiting for z77? seeing as they are on the verge of release

ahhh thanks ace,im such a raid noob

Thanks guys , rebuilding the array and re-installing windows is the least of my concerns..
my machine is failing so i have to replace now, not 'soon' (re: z77 suggestion)

Ok so bit the bullet , parts ordered...

    2 x 1TB Caviar Black Sata3 7200rpm 64MB cache (to be RAID0'ed...)
1 x 60GB OCZ Vertex 3 SSD (for the ISR Cache)
    1 x OCZ RevoDrive 3 PCI-E 120GB SSD (for my system drive)
    1 x i7 2600 Sandy
    4 x 4gb Corsair Vengeance 1600Mhz CL9
    1 x ASRock Z68 Extreme 4 Mobo

i guess i'll have to bench the Caviars , both on the Sata 3 and Sata 2 controller and then make a call on where they wil eventually live , and same for the SSD cache.

    (anyone for some cheap pre-loved 60GB Vertex 2's ??) :)
