Default Corsair Force GT on X58 Extreme6

I am brand new to SSD and just installed the Force GT and am trying to figure out if I have it set up optimally.

I plugged it into one of the sata2 ports to install, then ran the marvell installer and finally moved the disk to the first marvell port. But when I look at the disk in device manager, it says it is using the microsoft driver. CrystalDiskInfo tells me the Corsair is at firmware 1.3.3 and the transfer mode is SATA/600 and the supported features include NCQ and TRIM.

My first installation attempt was with the SSD plugged into the first marvell port but the system hung on reboots after the install was finished and I came across some posts that discussed installing in on the sata2 ports and then moving the disk to the marvell ports after install - so that what I tried and at least I didn't end up with an unbootable system.

Here are the numbers I got from CrystalDiskMark:

    Sequential Read : 292.042 MB/s
    Sequential Write : 163.101 MB/s
    Random Read 512KB : 340.050 MB/s
    Random Write 512KB : 163.081 MB/s
    Random Read 4KB (QD=1) : 25.261 MB/s [ 6167.1 IOPS]
    Random Write 4KB (QD=1) : 61.703 MB/s [ 15064.2 IOPS]
    Random Read 4KB (QD=32) : 108.829 MB/s [ 26569.7 IOPS]
    Random Write 4KB (QD=32) : 158.743 MB/s [ 38755.6 IOPS]

I tried updating the disk's driver using the marvell driver I downloaded from the asrock site, but it still seems to be using the microsoft driver.

So have I done this correctly? If not, what do I need to do to get this set up properly? I think I have seen debates on which drivers work best for this motherboard with this SSD because this is an earlier generation Marvell controller. Advice will be appreciated! Thanks!!!

i think its better to use what microsoft installs as the driver, use atto benchmark you will see better results

    Here's what ATTO tells me:

Is this the best I'm going to get with this motherboard and SSD combo? Are there any other sata port and/or driver combos I should try?

I don't seem to have permission to upload images - is that the way it's supposed to be?

Hmmm.... it seems that the insert image link doesn't seem to work for me either. The image is at: http://postimage.org/image/cmho7ujrn/
    Thanks!

Yes,those are the best figures you'll see with that mb,still faster than sata2 and not as fast as Intel SATA3

This board looks to have 2 different marvell controllers the 9128 and the 9120. Gigabyte used the 9128 on all of their older stuff. I dont know how it compairs with the 9120.

Like wazza said thats the best you will see out of those older marvell ports. If you want a cheap add-in card look up the IBM m1015. It can be picked up from ebay for $60-$90.

Thank you, guys - that's the kind of input I am looking for. I know my mobo is getting "older" now - LOL.

I currently have the ssd plugged into the first port, which is on the 9128. Just wanted to know if I should try it in any of the other extreme6 ports and if they would be any faster with this disk. Or would they give less performance? I guess I have 9128, 9120, and intel ports to choose from.

Someone pointed me to another benchmark, AS SSD, so I ran that one and got this: View image: AS SSD benchmark I'm getting faster write speeds than he is on his intel SSDSA2M160.

You can look here http://forums.tweaktown.com/storage-...120gb-ssd.html and see my test with the drive on the 9182 marvell controller. This controller is the closest to the newer intel sata3 ports.

So it looks like the reads for the same disk are lots faster with the newer controller. Guess I could have gotten away with a cheaper disk. Oh well, maybe I'll get to use it a bit longer... Definitely not worth spending the $150 or so for the controller that would allow it to be much faster.

Default test results for corsair gt on maxell 9128, maxell 9120, and intel controllers on x58 extreme6 mobo

I ran some comparisons today - the same tests with the disk connected to the motherboard's three different controllers. Here's how they came out...

Here's an alternate image link, in case the one above doesn't work: View image: comparison

I'm surprised at some of the discrepancies, like the sequential reads being faster on the 9120 than the 9128. and the sequential writes being fastest on the intel controller.

Are there other factors to be considered when deciding which is the best controller to use on this motherboard with this disk drive (Corsair Force GT)?

Thanks for your replies - this SSD stuff is all new to me!

i dont think theres much else you can do really, the ssd is fine its just the early poor performing marvell ports, next cheapest option would be try and pick up a cheap mb that uses the later marvell controllers, bords like the one ace uses or a sniper, your current sata3 ports should be fine though?
