Question ASRock Extreme 3 Gen 3 "Extreme Tuning Utility" - 2 of 5 Fans Show "0" Speed Values?

    Motherboard: ASRock Z68 Extreme 3 Gen3

The Extreme Tuning Utility (version 0.1.110). I have 4 case fans and also PSU fan (5 total). The utility is missing values for the "Chassis Fan 1 speed" and "Power Fan speed." Both of those show "0" fan speed. Is that a known issue with this utility, or does it mean that those fans aren't working?

    * Why doesn't this utility show "Chassis Fan 1 speed?"
    * Is there a newer version of this utility that I should install?

This question hasn't been answered. Is there anyone on this/these forums who has any technical knowledge or experience with ASRock's utilities? I certainly would like to have help in solving this issue. Please.

Do you have fans connected to all of your boards fan connectors? How did you connect the fan in your power supply to your board?

Only fans that are directly connected to your mother board will show a speed reading in XTU. If you have fans connected to Power Fan and Chassis 1, what speed setting are they set to in XTU? They might not start running if it is set to low.

Thank God! Somebody finally replied. Very nice of you, parsec! To answer your questions...
    * Yes, I have all four case fans connected to the MB.
    * I do not have the PWR_FAN1 connected to the PSU. I don't see any wires or cables to do that with, and neither do I know which one of the ports on the PSU to plug it into. I'm presuming it's one of the "Peripheral" ports (12V)?

I'm concerned about the PSU temp, of course. But, I'm also confused as to why my Chassis Fan_1 isn't showing ANY temp readings in the XTU. It always stays at zero "0".

Forgot to answer your last part, so I'm editing this comment into my post:

All settings are set at maximum Target speed, and Minimum temperature.

I have never used the ATXU so I can't answer anything about that specifically, but: If you haven't connected fans to the cha_fan1 and pwr_fan1 headers on the motherboard they will show 0 RPM.

And pwr_fan1 is really just another fan header (without any speed control), it's not something you connect directly to the PSU; I reckon the header name is mostly "historical" (the fan closest to the PSU).

Thanks for your reply. I found out that the tech I hired to hook up all my cables and wires did NOT attach anything to the chas_fan1 connector on the MB. Instead, he hooked 2 of the fans (on the front of my case) together, so that they each had power. They both turn. But, there is no hook-up to the chas_fan 1 Speed sensor on the MB, but the chas_fan 2 Speed is working in the utility! (Note: without my case open right now, I can't tell if the chas_fan 2 is connected to the MB, but I'm assuming it is?). And, I have no additional wires, so it looks like I'll never be able to see the fan speed for that #1 case fan. I'm really disappointed.

About the PSU: Shouldn't it really be hooked up so that I can monitor its temperature and/or fan speed? To me, that seems very important. Especially, now that I can find no air-flow at all coming from it. After all, it IS a connector on my ASRock MB (for some reason). Right?

I've had a terrible headache for several days now. Too much stress! Geeesh! I hope you get back to me on this.

The tech that wired/built your PC combined the two front chassis fans with a 'Y' connector, so they could be controlled together with one control, instead of two. The fan speed wire is not separate for each fan, and the 'Y' connector probably shows the speed of only one of the fans. That usually makes sense for front chassis fans, since they are probably identical fans, and monitoring their speed individually is really not necessary. It's possible to connect each fan individually to the board, since your Chassis 1 fan connection is not being used.

IMO, chassis fan speed is not a big deal, I don't even monitor it in some PCs I own, they just run at full speed and I know if they are running or not.

About the PSU, 99.99999% of modern PSU's do not allow their fans to be connected to a mother board, for power or speed monitoring. They also don't have any temperature monitoring capability.

As JPP said, the name Power Fan has been used on mother boards for years for legacy reasons. Actually, I bet you cannot adjust the speed of a fan connected to that connector, since most boards just supply full power to it, with no control at all. The fan speed in a PSU is automatically controlled by the PSU, and changes depending on the temperature of the PSU. You don't need to worry about the PSU's fan or temperature, besides having it mounted correctly.

Separate fan speed controllers can be added to PCs, some with displays of fan speed. A few also have temperature sensors that can be attached to whatever you want to check its temperature.

Why are you stressed-out about the chassis fan speeds? Your CPU and graphics card fan speeds and temperature are the main things to monitor.

parsec, I believe you have answered my questions on this issue, completely. I have learned a few things from your answers and from the replies I got from other posters. I'm going to "leave well-enough" alone, and not make any changes pertaining to fan hook-ups. This is one more issue out of the way, which helps to reduce my stress level.

I'm most grateful for your answers and the time you spent!

Follow the good advice that "parsec" gave and the only temps/fans that you should be concerned with are your CPU temps and rpm of CPU fan as well as GPU temp(s) and their fan rpm's
