    Default no display

i decided to revive my old pc and give it to my nephew,i have my old pc parts still working except for my motherboard. so i replaced it with an asrock G41C-GS the only motherboard available here for socket 775. i used my old radeon hd 4870 on it but no display.i tried it on my new unit and it works. and when i use the onboard graphics it boots fine.the only thing i havent done is change the bios version which is 1.20 if there is anything higher than 1.20 and use a different power supply.i tried searching for this motherboard but only found few topics and no help at all.is there a compatibility problem with pcie 2.0 cards? i have used an asrock motherboard on this vcard before not sure if its the -GS or -VS i forgot it was 2 years ago.

    old pc specs.

The Intel G41 chipset is not PCI-E 2.0 compatible (it is PCI-E 1.1)
see here: Intel® G41 Express Chipset

hmm.isnt pci-e 2.0 cards backwards compatible? meaning it can run on pci-e 1.1 using 1.1 bandwidth?

    edit:
my old asrock motherboard was asrock g31m-s r 2.0 and my vcard works well on it before it died almost 2 years ago.

    Generally, yes.
But there are instances where this is not true. Slots are generally more backward compatible than cards.
It's better to have a 2.0 slot with a 1.1/1.0 card than the other way around.

If you can upgrade the bios of the MB and the firmware of the Video Card, that may help, but I fear it probably wont.

I personally try to stay within the same generation to alleviate any potential issues.

I think that all 4870 video cards require two pci-e 6-pin power cable connections.
Can you borrow another power supply for testing?
Both of my 5 year old P35 and N650 systems work fine with my GTX 460 video cards.
Both motherboards are pci-e 1.x and the GTX 460 is pci-e 2.0, but as stated above, this setup might not be compatible with all motherboards.

yes it requires 2 6 pin power cables.my old psu have but cant find any to borrow.
i used this gpu before on an asrockg G31m-s r 2.0 which is i think is older than my current g41.ill try this later on a board with pci-e 2.0 with my old psu.if it still doesnt work then my psu might be dying.
btw i can use my gpu on my current system, with new psu.

i cant try my old psu on my new system because my mobo requires 8pin power cable, my old psu only has 4 pin power cable, and my new psu only has 8 pin power cable so i cant use it on my g41 mobo.

thanks for the replies! ill update as soon as i can.

Most if not all mid level or high end power supplies have an 8-pin EPS12v cable and a 4-pin ATX_12v cable.
A medium power psu with only a 4-pin ATX_12v cable should power a newer system that is not overclocked.

You might be able to carefully connect the 8-pin EPS12v power cable into the 4-pin ATX_12v socket if the unused pins do not short circuit with any nearby motherboard components. You must use the matching 4-pin portion of the power cable. Each half of the 8-pin power cable plug is different.

The Hec Raptor R500 appears to be a cheap, low end power supply.
Several user reviews on Newegg report failures after about 2 years.
I couldn't find any professional reviews from any of the best psu review sites.
I think that the problem is related to your Hec power supply.

Do not test the Hec psu on your P8Z77-V LK system.
