Default Device Manager - Unknown Device after MB drivers install

Just finished my build on a Z77 Pro4-M board. After installing Win 7 on a Samsung 830 256GB SSD I installed MB drivers as listed below. In W7 Device Manager I show one Other - Unknown Device. I'm pretty sure I installed all the necessary drivers but something is missing. System uses i5 3570K's built in HD 4000 graphics, no discrete GPU at all. No add on cards at all. Right now all that is connected is a mouse and keyboard. Drives are Samsung SSD, WD Caviar Black 500GB HDD and Sony Optiarc DVD. All show up in Device Manager.

Hoping someone might have a clue which of ASRock's drivers I might be missing. Here are available drivers I have installed for this MB and notes on which ones I did not install.

Audio Realtek high definition audio driver ver:R2.66 - INSTALLED
INF INF (chipset) driver ver:9.3.0.1019 - INSTALLED
Intel Intel Management Engine driver ver:8.0.3.1427 - INSTALLED
Lan Realtek Lan driver ver:7048 - INSTALLED
USB Intel USB 3.0 driver ver:1.0.4.220 - INSTALLED
VGA VGA driver ver:15.26.12.64.2761 - INSTALLED
    HDD ASMedia SATA3 Driver ver:1.3.1 - INSTALLED
HDD Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver ver:11.2.0.1006 - INSTALLED

    NOT INSTALLED
Intel Intel Rapid Start driver ver:1.0.0.1021 - I disabled Sleep & Hibernate for the SSD
Intel Intel Smart Connect driver ver:2.0.1083.0 - For updating email, social apps, etc, when system is in sleep mode. I disabled Sleep and Hibernate and don't do social media.
CIR - CIR receiver driver ver:20110219 - This is an ASRock driver for a remote control
Other - AppCharger ver:1.0.5 - ASRock driver for quicker charging of iPads, iPods, etc. Don't think I need
Other - Lucid Virtu MVP ver:2.1.114 - Modify Battlefield3 can not play issue. - This is ASRock's description. I don't game.
HDD SATA RAID Driver - Not running a RAID setup.

To my eye the only one's that I might try are the CIR receiver (MB does have a CIR header) and the Lucid Virtu MVP (not sure what that one is related to).

That is weird, you have listed all the required drivers perfectly, and the non-essential ones are all fluff. I've seen that problem in Device Manager when I did NOT install the Intel VGA driver, when I used a separate video card.

The only thing I can think of is, did you disable all the things in the UEFI you are not using/loading the drivers. That includes the CIR device, Rapid Start, Smart Connect, and the serial port. All that stuff in enabled by default in the UEFI. The other features like Rapid Start, Smart Connect, AppCharge and Lucid are not devices.

IMO, it's either the CIR or the serial port. Disable those suckers.

Turns out it was the Intel Smart Connect 2.0 driver. I installed that and the Unknown Device disappeared. Unfortunately I did this before reading your post so I didn't know to go into UEFI and disable your recommendations there. Probably would have fixed it without installing the driver. I have now disabled CIR device, Rapid Start, Smart Connect, the serial port and the parallel port. Everything seems OK now. I needed to spend a little more time studying the UEFI options before I did the driver install! Is there any way to go in and uninstall the driver or should I just leave it be?

Thanks very much for your reply and information.

You can easily uninstall that driver, it's just a program. Go into Programs and Features from Control Panel, find the entry for that driver, and right click on it and Uninstall, the end.

It thought it was wrong to have all the things like Smart Connect and Rapid Start enabled by default in the UEFI, but they must set it up for the least intervention from the user. That is, turn it on, install the OS, run the driver disk and everything is cranking away, similar to the crap-ware on all in one PCs. My recommendations are not "the best", it depends on what you like and want to do. I knew that missing drivers could cause errors like that (try not installing the Intel Management Engine if you want to see errors...) so I figured that's what it was.

Interesting that Smart Connect is a "device", I never knew that, since I don't use it.

How do you like your 830? I happened to use a 256GB 830 as a temporary OS drive while I fooled with a RAID 0 volume of SSDs. I have it on an Intel SATA II port, to leave the SATA III ports free. It still boots fast on the SATA II port, impressive. Putting a SATA III SSD on a SATA II port works just fine, you really aren't missing much, people.

Think I'll leave it for now. It's only 6 MB and as they say "if it ain't broke.....". I also would not have figured that Smart Connect would show up as a device. I had read the description of it and knew I would never use any of it's features so just assumed (that's always an invitation to trouble!) I wouldn't need it. Really is my fault of course for not studying the BIOS more carefully before installing the drivers .

This is my first time using an SSD so of course I am amazed by it's speed. Win 7 HP 64-bit install took less than 10 minutes to install from a bootable USB flash drive. I have configured Win 7 with most of the recommendations for optimizing it with a SSD but am a bit paranoid about using it properly so I get the best performance balanced with longevity of the drive. Lot's to learn. I was a bit miffed about losing 10% of the drive's capacity in order to have Over Provisioning space (per Samsung's recommendation). The "256 GB" drive was 238 GB formatted (which I expected) and the OP space took away another 20 GB so I was at 218 GB before installing the OS. OS took up about 12 GB so without any programs or data at all I'm at about 205 GB of usable space. Figure in the recommendation to not fill the SSD to more than 75% capacity and I'm looking at 160 GB of usable space. Glad I didn't get the 830 128 GB!

Luckily, I don't have a bunch on my current XP SP3 Dell system, about 95 GB total, so I should be fine. It's just another example of realistically figuring out your needs and usage requirements before writing the check!

From the Samsung ssd support page, when you register your ssd, you get 3 extra months on your warranty and notifications for new downloads.
I discovered this when I went to check the latest firmware version for my new 128GB ssd.

Thanks, I just registered last night. Maybe you know the answer to this. I installed the Samsung Magician software and I can't seem to find anywhere in that software that shows the current firmware version I am running. Would like to find it so I can see if there is an update available. Any suggestions? Also, no info on the Samsung website for this SSD model regarding how to do this.

I think that most disk utilities that show SMART information will include the firmware version.
    I used CrystalDiskInfo.
The Samsung DVD and user's guide describes how to update the firmware.
I haven't checked to see if you can update the o/s drive from within windows.
I think that you need to use the bootable usb or CD/DVD option.

BTW, I set my over provisioning to ~20GB which is about 17% of the drive space.
I want my new Samy ssd to outlive me.

There are FAQs and videos on the lower portion of the Samsung support page for your ssd model.

Thanks for that info. I had visited the Samsung support page. I did download and install the CrystalDiskInfo utility and it did show what my current firmware version is, shows up as the same as your screenshot, CXM03B1Q. Checked the Samsung site and this appears to be the latest version. I actually figured out where the info was in the Samsung Magician software right after doing the above. Speaking of the Samsung Magician software it has a Over Provisioning section that I could increase my OP allotment. Do you think it is safe to do that using this utility? I would have to shrink my primary partition about 10 GB. Is there any issue on the SSD that data is stored in the area I would be shrinking? Not quite sure how that works.
