Has anyone managed to get 5.1 surround sound output using the onboard Realtek audio with an Extreme6 x79 board? I need to dump the Gameblaster card that came with my board so that I can free up that slot but for some reason I can't get the onboard optical port to output in 5.1. In the Control Panel sound settings the only option I have stereo options for the speakers. Even more strange, in the Realtek HD Audio Manager, I only have tabs for Sound Effects and Default Format. I don't have the Speaker Configuration panel that I've seen in various online posts that show how to set surround speakers. Is this just me or is there an issue with Realtek in Windows 7?
