    Default ASRock 970 Extreme3/AMD FX-6100/16GB-Kit PC3-10667U

I have a ASrock 970 extreme 3 M/B that has 16GB ram, yet when I go to my OS (ubuntu 64bit / ESXi 4/5) it will only see 8GB, but when I fire a command at the OS it reports that there are 16GB ram installed but it is not released to the OS..

    Any ideas!

    sudo python check-my-memory.py

I've also ran memcheck and it will pass all tests but only on 8GB!

At what voltage are you running your RAM?
If other then normal, try setting it to defaults.

Everything set to "default" unfortunately, I'm going to reload the OS, as the drive came from another PC so maybe there is some sort of issue with swapping drives from machine to machine without doing a clean install..

You could boot off a "live" Linux CD & see what that reports.
(For testing, quicker then a reinstall.)

Tried fedora live CD and it only see's 8GB also, have an old hard drive with a 32bit version of vista and it boots no problem and can see 16GB with 4GB usable, at this stage im just lost, its obviously something to do with linux, do not want to use windows OS but looks like I have no other option.

At least I am not alone.

    Just built a Asrock 970 extreme3 with FX8350 and 2x16 GSkill DDR3 1866.

I made these changes to grub:

    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="iommu=pt iommu=1"

I then see the following which I think is correct:

    check-my-memory.py - version: SJ 2013-02-22
    OK, you're root

    size: 8GiB
    description: DIMM Synchronous [empty]

    ------------------------------------------------------

And here is what I have for dmesg

    dmesg |grep AMD-V
    [ 1.096361] AMD-Vi: Found IOMMU at 0000:00:00.2 cap 0x40
    [ 1.096364] AMD-Vi: Interrupt remapping enabled
    [ 1.096600] AMD-Vi: Initialized for Passthrough Mode

    Mobo BIOS is at P1.70
I enabled IOMMU in the BIOS and the BIOS see's both sticks of memory. Looks like the O/S see's it too:

Finally: show more detailed memory info from lshw. This can take up to 30 seconds ...
    description: System Memory
    size: 16GiB
description: DIMM DDR3 Synchronous 667 MHz (1.5 ns)

description: DIMM DDR3 Synchronous 667 MHz (1.5 ns)
    size: 8GiB
    description: DIMM Synchronous [empty]

    O/S is linux mint 15 64bit.

I tried booting off of the live cd but that only shows 8G too.

One thing I should mention is that I replaced the previous mobo which was a Gigabyte board with a Phenom II 920. I simply moved the boot drive and LVM over to the Asrock. Mint booted fine, had to load the driver for the nvidia video card that was new to the system but all else is working fine.

I am tempted to throw in a spare drive and do a fresh install to see if that fixes the issue, just too tired right now to give that a go.

If anyone has any tips I would be most appreciative. Also hope I am posting in the right forum. If not, be kind.

Just wanted to mention that I am using
    G.SKILL Ares Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model F3-1866C10D-16GAB

I checked the Asrock site for compliant memory and surprisingly, the Gskill is not listed.

    ASRock > Products > 970 Extreme3 > Memory Support List

    However, this IS supported
    Kingston HyperX 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 Desktop Memory HyperX Plug n Play Model KHX16C9P1K2/16

Perhaps I should RMA the ram and go with the Kingston.

As a side note, I have the Bios flagged for default with the exception of enabling IOMMU

Even though the Gskill is 1866, it shows up as 1333 in the Bios. I am sure that is telling me something : )
Maybe the mobo is particular about what RAM it uses?
