    Default Heatsink compatibility

Hi, I have an Asrock 990FX extreme3, 16 gb 1333 MHz normal sized ram, a NZXT phantom 3.0 full tower and an XFX HD 6970 GPU. I want to upgrade my heatsink. I was looking at the Zalman CNPS11x etreme and Xigmatek's Thors hammer. Will they fit? Or will they block the RAM? If I opted for Thors hammer I would also put a fan on it. Also what is the highest MHZ RAM this board can use and which Bios update would I have to install to enable it? Ive just read that the place where I originally posted is no longer being used so am chancing that this is the right place

Some cpu cooler manufacturers have a technical drawing that details the dimensions.
XIGMATEK - Thor's Hammer has a limited technical drawing near the bottom of their datasheet.
I couldn't find a technical drawing on the Zalman web site.

Your best bet is to read cpu cooler reviews that use your motherboard during their review. The better review sites will include details about how a cooler fits and any clearance issues.
FrostyTech - Best Heat Sinks & PC Cooling Reviews are very good but their test setup is different from most other sites.
Noctua.at - sound-optimised premium components "Designed in Austria"! has very detailed technical drawings, their cpu coolers are excellent and they have cooler/motherbaord model compatibility lists for each of their models.

As I recall the higher end Zalman cpu coolers are highly rated.
If you have standard height (30mm) memory heatspreaders, clearance probably will not be a problem.
Most of the tower style cpu cooler's height is 155 - 160mm (or more) measured from the top surface of your cpu.
If your computer case has a side panel fan installed, there might be clearance issues.

Sorry, but what is "normal sized RAM"? If you mean that it does not have any large heat sinks that makes it tall, which still won't be a standard size, since a standard does not exist, it will most likely work with your cooler. If you included the exact name and model of your memory, than we would have a much better chance of answering your question.

Also consider that unless the cooler is absolutely square as you look at it from the top, you can mount the cooler +/- 90 degrees to help fit correctly. If the fan is mounted on the side of the cooler, that too can be a clearance issue, but usually the fan can be moved.
