    Default Wierd CD-ROM problem

I built a new computer. Specs are:
    ASRock Z87 Extreme4
    Intel Core i5-4670K
    Windows 8

I have a supported LG Super Multi disc drive (CD/DVD/Bluray).

I can boot off of it and install and do anything. Install OS, update bios, etc...

However, when I am in Windows 8, it just shows up.

If I put a disc in it, Explorer does not show me that there is anything there.

If I double-click on it, it says F:\ is not accessable. Access is denied.

If I go into hardware manager, it shows everything is happy.

If I go into disk manager, here it will give me disc label information, but still I can't access it.

Even more bizare. I installed some virtual CD software and I have the same problem with virtual drives.

Does anyone have any help with this?

What SATA driver do you have installed, the IRST driver? If so, there are new power saving features for Optical drives, that cause them to basically shut off when not in use for a while. This is also related to Windows 8, and the Z87 chipset.

In the BIOS, Storage Configuration, do you have Aggressive SATA Link Power Management enabled? If so, disable it and see if it affects your issue.

Sorry, I was in the hospital for a couple weeks...

    I am not using IRST.

I am not using Aggressive SATA Link Power Management

(both are disabled in the BIOS).

Sounds like an aggressive I/O lock. Did you install business-level security or "netnanny" software that would have played around with the group policy settings of denying read-access of removable storage?

    Here's a "fix-it" from Microsoft worth trying: http://support.microsoft.com/mats/cd...problems/en-us

That looked promising. But in the end, nothing changed.

BTW, no business level security or net nanny type stuff.
