    Default Z77 Extreme 4 crackling/distorted sound

    Hi all

    Wondering if anyone can help

Been having an issue for a while where my sound crackles/pops/distorts. I believe its the ALC898 codec? Tried to un-install all sound drivers, update to latest drivers but to no avail.

Definately not the speakers as my last 2 sets its also done it on, plus it happens with my turtle beaches which are fine on the xbox/ps3

Been having a read up on the net and alot of people say its a driver/windows 7 issue, anyone got a way to solve this?

Both, tried 3 different sets of new speakers, (luckily I've found other uses for them) and comes through the earphones too.

I have seen mention that this may be a problem with Windows 7, 64-bit when utilizing over 4 Gb of RAM. I have this using a quality plug-in audio card. I don't know any details other than it may be useful to limit the amount of RAM accessed. There may be bios settings that help.

So if I'm using 16gb your saying that I'm going to have to disable it somehow? Seems a bit pointless having an OS and system that is made for more than 4gb ram then having issues :-S

Yes, I understand. I'm only relating what I have read elsewhere. I have not tried lowering the RAM myself.

I'm researching more on this at present.

There is quite a bit of mention on the topic of crackling and memory (leaks) in Windows 7. I'm not finding much on solutions.

...best I can do at this time.

Seems easy enough to test the theory. I believe the below link would test that out.

#3 - Please use the eXtreme Outer Vision Power Supply Calculator found HERE to determine if it might be your PSU at issue.

So really its just a case of stopping windows using the ram, will this have a knock on effect running other programs?
