Probably the only thing I'd caution you of using a 2U HS in an ATX case is that it'll be more susceptible to sucking up any heat that lies close to the MB. How much? TBD.

That's why when I read you have an ATX case I suggested the one I did as it sits higher off the board and in doing so is more able to take advantage of the cooler air being circulated within with fewer "low' speed fans.

1U and most 2U racks have high speed fans to push/pull air through the chassis at a fair clip for decent circulation over and across all the enclosed parts. Negating most "dead' spots.

You might do a Google search using the boards C602 chipset and Ubuntu. I just did a cursory search and saw some irregularities happening but I didn't pursue any father than that so they may have been addressed at/by this time.

Your thoughts makes complete sense, I'll keep those in mind and report back how the temps are going forward.

I dont anticipate any issues with Ubuntu and thus will give 13.10 a shot on my setup, but I'll also update on this if I encounter any hassles for future-reference sake.

Thanks again for all the valued help!

Here's one I didn't expect, a compatible narrow ILM CPU cooler from Noctua... actually they have two such models:

Noctua.at - sound-optimised premium components "Designed in Austria"!

    From the above Noctua link:

Does the mounting-system of the NH-U12DX i4/NH-U9DX i4 support LGA2011 based Xeon platforms with Narrow ILM?

There are two different types of ILM (Independent Loading Mechanism) for Intelís LGA2011 based Xeon CPUs: Square ILM with 80x80mm hole spacing and Narrow ILM with 56x94mm hole spacing. The mounting system of the NH-U12DX i4/NH-U9DX i4 is fully compatible with both types:

You lost me there Prof Jim, or are you just saying that these coolers will work with both ILMs?

That is true, I was just surprised they were compatible at all with the narrow ILM.
