Default Sound issue with onboard audio Asrock 970 Pro 3 R2.0

    Hi all,

I'm Kris, nice to know you all. I'm new here and would like to ask your guidance regarding my issue with my new mobo.
I recently buy a secondhand Asrock 970 pro3 R2.0 from someone. When I tried to fresh install Win 7 64 and all mobo's driver including my previous software, I noticed that I have no audio out from my speaker.
I might have an idea that onboard audio on this mobo is damaged but I would like to confirm it with the expert.

I tried to use windows troubleshooting to resolve my issue but it couldn't identify the issue. Tried to see BIOS setup, the onboard audio was set to enable. Tried to re-download the audio driver from asrock web and realtek web but still no luck.
The driver was installed (it was there on program and features) but I don't see any realtek HD audio manager on control panel. The most strange things was when I tried to run dxdiag on this new setup, I can't see any audio device on sound tab. Here the SS.

I think this is the biggest clue that the onboard audio is broken. What about your export POV?
I think I might get a cheap discrete sound card just to get the audio working, but would this resolved the issue? Is my mobo main issue is the damaged onboard audio only? Wouldn't want this (suspected) broken audio cause another hardware malfuntion, though..
I prefer to get this RMA but the things is that in here we have to wait at least a month or more to get the replacement, means that I have to purchase a new mobo which is more expensive than to get a new sound card.

What about your opinion? is this really just a damaged onboard audio?

Look at the BIOS if the onboard sound is enabled. I damaged one of my motherboards once and the onboard sound stopped working, then I disabled it on BIOS and installed a sound card. It worked good and the motherboard is still with me and it is really fine.

    hi princeyann,

thanks for your reply. I've already tried to look at the BIOS, it was already enabled. if I buy a sound card, would the front panel jack working too? because atm, both my rear and front panel can't produce sound.. is the front panel audio not working due to the damaged onboard audio?
sorry if my question sounds stupid..

If your audio chip is bad, your front and rear audio connectors won't work properly.
Make sure that the front panel HD Audio cable is properly connected to your motherboard.

With your system powered off and the power supply's A.C. cable disconnected from the wall outlet, unplug the HD Audio cable from the motherboard and then power up your system to see if the rear audio jacks are working.

If/when you install a new sound card, you will need to disable the on-board sound in the bios.
You will need to connect the HD Audio cable to the sound card for the front panel audio to work and you will need to configure the sound card after you have installed it's drivers and software.

Your sound card will have a 9-pin setup for the front panel HD Audio connection similar to the green pin area in this picture.

    Hi prof..
I tried to do as you suggested, but it seems the issue still not fixed. So I guess this is an additional clue that my onboard audio was damaged, right?
I will try to find a cheap sound card today and will post the updates later. thank you all !!

PS : I have browsed and check with my local dealer, they have this AUDIOTRAK MAYA 5.1 MK-II ZENI
but I see no front 9-pin panel on the board. is this mean that this product doesn't support front panel audio?

I download the sound card's user manual and the AUDIOTRAK MAYA 5.1 MK-II ZENI does NOT support the front panel HD Audio output.

This is an older card from 2009 that does have win7/win8 drivers for download.

You will need to look for another card to be able to use front panel headphones or a microphone.

Sometimes there are fitment problems between the computer case and the motherboard and there might be a problem with the rear I/O panel or with one or more of the motherboard standoffs. If you remove your motherboard from the case, you can test your system by placing the motherboard on a cardboard box beside the computer case to see if the on-board sound will work.

It is best to add new information in a new post.
When you edit one of your posts to add additional information, we have no way of knowing about the changes.

I couldn't find the Sim Cool SC-82 computer case on the Simbadda website.
