Default TW3X4G1333C9A memory installed on ASRock 870 Extreme3 Runs at 800 MHZ

    My Specs (Per Speccy):
    Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit SP1 Installation Date: 12/18/2012
    AMD Phenom II X4 945
    TW3X4G1333C9A 4 GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 400MHz (6-6-6-15)
    ASRock 870 Extreme3
512MB ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series
    465GB Western Digital WDC WD5000AAKS
    931GB SAMSUNG HD103SJ

    Problem:

When I installed back in 2012 these ran at 667 MHZ (9-9-9-24 )

But now for some reason they no longer are set to run at this speed. I did not go into the BIOS and make the changes.

Any chance you did a CMOS/BIOS clear recently? Or you haven't cleared the BIOS since 2012? Or did you flash to a new BIOS version?

A BIOS clear or flash to a new BIOS will set all BIOS settings to their default values.

Regardless of how your memory apparently changed speed, go into the BIOS and change the speed to 667MHz/1333.

Memory commonly does not operate at its fully rated speed by default, which is done to insure the memory will operate in more PCs, including those that may not be able to handle the higher speed.

A BIOS clear will set the memory to its default speed. Since your memory is rated at 1333, its default speed is probably lower

What did you use to verify the memory was running at 667MHz in 2012?

To check speed I ran memtest 3.0 I believe for two hours and completed two passes.
I also ran speccy as I did yesterday.

The reason I pulled my case apart was that it had crashed and all I got was a blinking cursor.
I went into BIOS after 6 attempts and found that all settings for timing were way off.
I made a new Memtest 5 boot cd and ran memtest for 2 hours at the 400 MHZ speed with no errors yesterday.

Both memory modules are in the Blue slots side by side. The ones closest to the CPU.

You have both modules in channel A, so you are not using the dual channel memory capability of your system. That should not affect the memory speed, just an FYI for a free performance upgrade. Usually ASRock boards recommend using slots A2 and B2 for two modules.

Your memory has at least two sets of timings programmed into it. If you run CPU-Z on that PC and click on the SPD tab, you'll see most if not all of the sets of timings programmed into that memory. Speccy will do the same, if not all of the sets of timings.

Timings that seem "way off" may just be set to a different timing set from the memory. If all your memory settings in the BIOS are set to Auto, they'll just use the default set from the memory.

If the memory timing settings were truly off and random, that could mean the board's battery is bad. Also other settings in the BIOS may be set wrong as well. Or a corrupted BIOS might be possible. Neither of those have been confirmed yet whatsoever.

In the motherboard illustration in section 1.3 it shows the memory slots labled from left to right as :
    A1, A2, B1, B2- With A1, A2,as blue, B1, B2 as white
It also shows that #7 dual channel is slot 1&3 FOR DUAL CHANNEL A one blue one white ?
It also shows that #8 dual channel is slot 2&4 FOR DUAL CHANNEL B one blue one white ?

The description below the picture gives the following info:
    #7--- 2 x 240-pin DDR3 DIMM Slots
    (Dual Channel A: DDR3_A1, DDR3_B1; Blue)

    #8--- 2 x 240-pin DDR3 DIMM Slots
    (Dual Channel B: DDR3_A2, DDR3_B2; White)

But in the end by reading the Bios it shows that the manual illustration was wrong.
Dual Channel A: Blue Slots 1&2
Dual Channel B: white Slots 3&4
    The Bios reads:
    Total Memory: 4096MB
    Dual-Channel Memory Mode
    DDR3_A1: 2048MB/667MHz DDR3_1333
    DDR3_B1: 2048MB/667MHz DDR3_1333
    DDR3_A2: None
    DDR3-B2: None
So yes I am running Dual Channel A

    Section 1.3 of manual shows A1 B1 A2 B2 and is correct.
    1=Blue(A&B) 2=White(A&B)
Always using two slots of the same color gives dual channel.
It means that all sections of manual say the right.

My final post on this thread.

The best way to get the 1333 MHZ was to replace them.
    G.SKILL Ripjaws (2 x 2GB)DDR3 1333 Model F3-10666CL9D-4GBXL
These are not on the QVL but they were on the G.Skill list for this mobo.
    I put them in slots 3 & 4 ( A2 & B2 ) White
I left all timings on [Auto]

Ran Memtest86 5.01 for 2 passes with no errors.
Ran CPU-Z and speccy to confirm.

I have used a pair of GSkill 9-9-9-24 on this board and changed timings to 7-7-7-24 without errors (Memtest 86+ 4.2)
