Question Z87 Overclock question here OK?

Is it OK to ask overclock questions here? What hardware and software info should I include in post?

    Thanks

You can ask OC questions here, of course. Not sure what software would be important, unless you use it to OC.

Your hardware list in your PC specs is good, but nothing about your CPU cooler, which is extremely important when over clocking, particularly with a Haswell processor like yours. Your CPU cooler will determine how much you can OC, and unless it is a custom water loop, it will be one of the two main limiting factors in your OC. The other being how good your CPU is.

No offense, but one thing that worries me a little bit is this from your PC specs: Corsair Graphite with 3 fans!

I assume the '!' means it is extra good. Not necessarily. It depends on the case, the fans in the case, how hot your video card gets, and if these things affect your CPU temperature. They can and will.

    Fire away...

    Default Z87 Overclock Question

    OK, thanks.

I have experimented with the built-in o'clock settings. When I set the o'clock to 4.0 gig all is well. When I set it to 4.2 gig PC will not boot. Blue screen. DMP file says problem seems to be caused by ntoskrnl.exe.

Issue does not seem to be heat related as the PC will not boot, even if I leave it turned off for 10 minutes.

    Thoughts? Is diagnosis possible?

    Thanks again,
    Terry

I like that, "o'clock" for over clocking, never thought of that one.

First question is, have you ever O'Clocked before? Just trying to gauge your experience level. Even if you have, Haswell processors are different in some ways than all previous Intel CPUs.

I see you are using an early BIOS version, 2.30, right? The latest version for your board is 3.00. Since you have an i5-4670K, a BIOS update is not essential, but who knows if ASRock improved the auto OC settings in later versions. Something to consider if you have no success after trying other things:

    ASRock > Z87 Extreme4

I agree heat should not be an issue when simply booting the PC, assuming the CPU cooler is mounted correctly. Since you did not respond about what CPU cooler you have, I smell a stock cooler. If so, that won't do if you run CPU stress testing. You must monitor CPU temperature when you O'Clock, I suggest this program:

    HWiNFO, HWiNFO32/64 - Download

The 4.2GHz O'Clock is failing most likely due to a BIOS setting in the OC Tweaker screen that is not appropriate for that level of O'Clock.

So we are at the point where we need to know what the BIOS settings in OC Tweaker are, or at least what the CPU voltages (VCore and CPU Input) are set to. Also, what the CPU Voltage mode setting is. Don't just tell us what they are, we want to see them.

Two easy ways to do that. For BIOS settings, if you put a USB flash drive into a USB port on the board's IO panel, when in the BIOS if you press the F12 key, a screenshot of the screen will be saved to the flash drive.

Or you can run that HWiNFO64 program with the 4.0GHz O'Clock active, and get a screen shot of that. That is, after the program has been running for say at least five minutes. We can figure out what some BIOS settings are by looking at the screenshot.

Personally, I would like to see a HWiNFO64 screen shot. Not the entire display, just from the top down to the fan speed display.

Post either or both of these things here, or links to the pictures, and we can continue.

Also, are you using the ASRock A-Tuning utility?

The "o'clock," yea, I just invented it yesterday 'cause I'm such a noob.

This AM updated bios to 3.00.
    Never over clocked before.
I have the HWiNFO, will post later.
Will get bios screenshot later - did not know I could do that.
Using the stock? fan that came with the i5.
I have A-Tuning but have not been using it. I chose the "standard" over clock setting in the bios.

Thanks for the help, I'll provide more info later.

I have some screen shots and an htm file. Seems like I can submit only one image per post.

Three bios screen shots combined. In the bottom one I changed the CPU Cache Ratio from 38 to 42. No help, still bsod.

I'm going to redo the first upload to improve visibility.
