No mother board memory upgrade for a video card will be necessary. The two memory systems do not need to be identical, and each have their own memory controller.

For example, video cards have been using GDDR5 memory for a while now, since 2008, so these video cards have worked with DDR2 and DDR3 memory in mother boards, and now with DDR4 memory used in X99 systems.

Any data used by a video card that is supplied by the CPU and mother board memory is not being accessed by the video card's memory controller. So no need to match memory types.
