Default Asrock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 not detecting PCIE graphic cards in top x16 slot (PCIE2)

    computer specs:
    CPU : i5 2400
    ram: 2x4gb G.Skill ripjaw X 17000 2133mhz (running at the default 1600)
    HDD: 1tb WD green
    graphics: asus 6870 1gb
    OS: win7 pro 64 bit
    motherbaord: z68 extreme3 gen3 (both old 1.3 bios and 2.3 bios)

apart from the motherboard all the components are second-hand, but came from working computers. the motherboard itself is "BRAND NEW"; had never been used before and only just came out the box.

    problem:

topmost PCIEx16 slot (PCIE2 on motherboard) doesn't work. any graphics card installed into the slot is not recognised by the computer, does not output display and doesn't even show up in device manager as an unknown (or otherwise unexpected) device (I have also tried a 8800gt, a HD3850 and an random pcie graphics card that doesn't need a power adapter, none of which worked). The computer defaults to the on-board graphics.

the second PCIEx16 slot (PCIE4 on motherboard) DOES work, cards output graphics, drivers install and the on-board graphics is disabled when a graphics card is is put in this slot. Unfortunately this slot is only an x8 slot, so not an ideal solution (this would also prevent me ever crossfiring etc)

    attempted fixes:

ensured all power etc is plugged in to all components (many many times)
tried multiple graphics cards (all of which work in other systems, and the second pcie slot on this motherboard)
tried re-seating all components (multiple times)
    up-dated BIOS.
tried installing drivers etc while card is in second PCIE slot then turning off and swapping to First PCIEx16 slot
tried running a card in EACH PCIE slot (someone on here in another thread said that got it working as long as the second card stayed in!) - only card in second slot is recognised
updated all drivers/utilities etc to latest versions.
ive also tried other ram in case it was somehow a ram issue.

none of these steps works, to me it seems that basically the first pciex16 slot is dead!

can anyone think of anything I may have missed that could get the slot working?

I am aware that some others have had this issue with this (and other similar generation) board, was there ever a fix developed?

unfortunately given how "old" the board is now I doubt RMA is an option, despite the board being brand new:(

Try changing CPU as last chance but 99% the board is defective.

Have you done a close inspection of all of the pcie2 slot's electrical contacts for possible damage?

Does the underside of the motherboard have any signs of damage?

Have you tested your system with the motherboard resting on a cardboard box outside of the computer case?

Have you removed all wires, cables and hardware that is not necessary for booting into the bios?
This means booting with no connected drives, only one memory module installed, no mouse and all unneeded usb cables disconnected.

The problem appears to be fixed now!:)

While re-seating the CPU again I noticed that a couple (2 or 3) of the CPU contact pads in a corner of the chip were slightly browner than the rest. It Looked like someone put fingerprint or something on the very edge (previous CPU owner I assume). after cleaning that off the PCIE 16x slot started working. must have been disrupting or otherwise preventing contact with pins critical to the 16 slot and not the 8 slot!

so if anyone else has a similar issue in future and sees this: Its worth cleaning the back of the CPU off very well, just in case something barely visible is messing up the contacts.

Glad to hear that your PCIe x16 slot is now working.

Applying too much thermal grease (aka TIM) can contaminate the edge and/or the bottom of the cpu's pcb (printed circuit board) and cpu socket.

Thermal grease usually has a color that is white or gray.

    Thanks for the update.
