Default Need help with getting z77 Extreme4 to recognize RAM I was just gifted

    Hey all...

I was saving my pennies to buy a couple of sticks of ram to bring my system RAM up to 16GB, and a friend of mine who builds computers all the time gave me a pair of corsair XMS3 8GB sticks! Needless to say, I was excited!

    They are this model: CORSAIR XMS3 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2000 (PC3 16000) Desktop Memory Model CMX8GX3M2A2000C9 - Newegg.com

Anyway, at first, I installed them in the first and third slots from the cpu. They read as single channel in the BIOS and I only had 8GB total. I then enabled the XMP profile 1.2 and set it to 1333 MHz (which is the base speed for this RAM) Rebooted and now it sees that they are dual channel, but I still only have 8GB showing. There should be 16 GB. I've updated all my drivers (though what that would do while I'm in the BIOS is unknown to me) and the BIOS version is the latest one according to the online BIOS update utility (dated some time in 2013).

Is there any possibility I will be able to configure this system to work with this RAM?

    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to the forum.

The Newegg link for your memory kit shows that it is an 8GB kit that includes two 4GB memory modules.

The Corsair web page for your memory kit says that the kit includes 2 x 4GB memory modules.

Mixing memory kits that are are not identical can cause problems.

I am tremendously sorry. I took my friend's word that it was 16 GB of RAM. It appears that they are only sold in pairs, hence the "8G" in the middle of the name, 2x4GB sticks.

Thank you for your help in pointing out my error!

    You're welcome.

I checked the Corsair Memory Finder to see if the memory kit is compatible with your motherboard and Corsair does not list your memory kit as being compatible with your Z77 Extreme4.

If a memory kit is not listed as compatible in the ASRock motherboard compatibility list or the memory manufacturer's list it is unlikely that it will work.

This is the link to the Corsair results for your motherboard with 8GB of memory: ASRock Z77 Extreme4 Memory Upgrades - Guaranteed Compatible Memory for your ASRock Z77 Extreme4 from Corsair

You can also expand the search for 16GB or 32GB kits.
