Default Asus P5K-E doesn't recognize IDE optical drives due to AHCI?

I need some advise on how to proceed with the following problem:

For my 13 year old son I've put together a system containing the following main components:

    - Asus P5K-E Wifi AP LGA775 mainboard
    - Q9550 cpu
    - 4 x 2 GB DDR2-800
    - Samsung 850 Evo 256 GB SSD
    - MSI HD5770 Hawk 1 GB graphics card
    - Be Quiet 500 Watt PSU
    - IDE DVD ROM
    - IDE DVD writer

Before installing Windows 7 Home Premium x64, I changed the SATA mode to AHCI, like I am supposed to do to get the most out of the SSD.
After that I had some trouble booting from the Windows 7 because 'no bootable device could be detected'.
I changed the BIOS back to factory default settings except for the SATA mode which I changed again from IDE to AHCI.
Then I was able to boot from the Windows CD and install Windows 7.
Installation was very slow though, i.m.o. a lot slower than usual but still I managed to install Windows.

After installation Windows doesn't show me any of the optical drives but instead a floppy drive that isn't there....?
Checking the BIOS I cannot seem to find the optical drives either...?

Both optical drives do have power, they open and close.
I have a feeling it is related to the AHCI mode but I'm not sure.
The only idea I can come up with is to buy a new SATA optical and hope this will be recognized.
If someone has a better idea on how to proceed, I would be grateful.

In the bios ADVANCED menu, are these your current settings?
    • J-Micron eSATA/PATA Controller: Enabled
    • Controller Mode: IDE

Is one optical drive configured as MASTER and the other configured as SLAVE.
Make sure that each optical drive is connected to the same type of parallel connector; master to master connector and slave to slave connector.

Are both of the optical drives listed in windows Device Manager.

Jezus...ProfJim...is there a motherboard (brand) you don't know by heart...?!
Tell me now and I know I will never buy that brand ;-).

It was the J-Micron Controller that was on Disabled instead of Enabled.
With the risk of making a complete fool of myself now....I must have thought this controller was for External Sata only...something my13 year old son is not going to need in the near future....
And then I have this strange habit of disabling everything in the BIOS I don't really need.

    Thanks a lot, man!

BTW...do I still have to be worried about the Windows installation?
Everything seems to be working fine. The system is fast, boots fast, responds fast, my son is happy :-)

    Thanks for the good laugh!!

I had a vague feeling that the Asus P5K was a P35 based motherboard, and I'm familiar with Gigabyte P35 boards.

I downloaded the user manual for your P5K motherboard after I saw the following in the Asus P5K-E Wifi-AP specifications:

    Storage
    Southbridge
    6 xSATA 3 Gb/s ports
    Support RAID 0,1,5,10
JMicronŽ JMB363 PATA and SATA controller
1 xUltraDMA 133/100/66 for up to 2 PATA devices
    2 xExternal SATA Gb/s port (SATA On-the-Go)
    Support RAID 0,1,JBOD

It was then a simple matter to check the JMicron bios setup options in the user manual.

The trick is to know what to look for and where to find the answer.
Don't worry, be happy, it sounds like your son's system is fine now.

    **edit**

I agree, but I leave everything enabled before I install the operating system and then disable all the features that I won't be using.
