I know that this is a somewhat trivial question, but I'm trying to get an ECDL computer licence, so I've got to get this straight.

Does the resolution of a computer display, for example 1280x1024, mean "Pixels per inch" or "Pixels per screen width x Pixels per screen height"?

I have serious doubts as to how a display could possibly show 1280 pixels per inch! I wouldn't have asked this, normally, but it says in the materials that we have recieved that the first alternative, Pixels per inch, is the correct one.
