Thread: Looking for a new monitor

Default Looking for a new monitor

It's time to replace my aging and craptuclar 5 year old CRT 17" monitor with an amazing max res of 1024x768@85hz. I'm not sure what kind would be best for me, as I really don't know anything in montiors. What I want is great image quality and colors, support of a high (standart, no tweaking of game files) res (1600x1200 most likely) with a deceant refresh rate (around 85hz, I don't want my eyes to bleed), and also look great in 1024x768 (in games that my comp struggles with) without any stretching or anything. And ofcourse, it has to be pretty big - around 19-20" viewable area. I would like a reasonable price on it, too, without ebay. I'm not sure if I would rather get an LCD or CRT monitor. Don't LCDs have issues with native resolutions and ghosting? As I said I want to switch res around without any problems, so if it looks all stetched out @1024x768 it proably won't fit me. Any suggestions?

No reason to get an LCD unless you need space or mobility.

Just look for a 19'' CRT on Newegg that lets you run at 1600x1200@72Hz+. If you can afford one that supports a higher resolution at 72Hz+, go for it, but I doubt you'll need to play at higher than 1600x1200 anytime in the next five years. But, you should certainly pick something with the intention of using it for around five years; monitors are not something you often replace.

LCDs are still going thru major improvements, which are needed, in color quality (move to LED) and speed (under 4ms). I plan on getting a 21" CRT before they become to hard to find as gaming on my buds LCDs bugs me, WAY too much ghosting going on. My 19" has been perfect going on about 8 years now.

Well what's the refresh time of his LCD? I don't know why, but I get opposite opinions in every forum I post this:P

There are some LCDS that are on par with CRTs, but for what they are worth, CRTs are better cause $$. But lcds from like dell, samsung, viewsonic have been reviewed to be good for gaming, because no ghosting and good response time and color depth. But for gaming i would go with CRT cause the resolution and refresh rate are simply better. I have both..19' lcd and 17' crt..the crt has a higher resolution and refresh rate.
