The technique would be very similar (if you look at it its very similar to lapping heatsinks) plus you'd only be using the finer finishing stages (with enough homework on the subject a person should be able to at least remove most if not all of the scratch).
You could even look into optical polishing though in the end you'll still likely wind up with a similar process again.

Sounds like it would be worth a try IMO...before making more scratches with abrasives anyway.

I'd worry the vaseline would eventually degrade and leave noticable residue in the former scratch after a time. My personal suggestion is wax or silicone based furniture polish, though following the same instructions on the wiki. Fills in CD scratches near perfectly and should be pretty safe if you use a mild brand like Old English.
