Default Is it better to SLI an older model?

I am doing some upgrading and am wondering if it would be better to SLI an older model card (say GeForce 7800 or 8600 series) or just get one single new model, like an 8800. Price would probably be about the same so which would perform better? Is SLI universal to all programs or do the programs have to be coded to support SLI mode?

Nah, single cards are usually better, since SLI suport in some games are limited. PLus u have the opportunity to get SLI with the newer card as soon as ur not limited by ur budget.

No sli isnt...sometimes it doesnt work, sometimes it runs poorly compared to single card solutions.

Thanks for the reply randomness. Since that's the case, I see that MSI has a pretty nice little card in the N9600GT. It's received some good reviews. I'll keep looking at other options as well.
